Describe the bug

when i tried to run
pip install -r requirements.txt
i get
error: externally-managed-environment

Were you trying to install using this method? If so, did you follow step 2: You could also try to create a virtualenv and then install all the requirements.

This is likely related to PEP 668 which allows operating systems, such as the one you're using, to disallow using the system pip. The preferred method of installation in such cases is to use a venv as per the README.

I must be missing step by step or something.
pip install virtualenv
virtualenv -p python3 venv
source venv/bin/activate
pip install -r requirements.txt
That gives same error.

If you run which pip you can get the location of the pip being used, does it show it's using the one in your new venv or is it still using the system one? If it's the latter, it's possible when it created a venv it didn't include pip. You might be able to solve this by running: python3 -m ensurepip --upgrade

when i do that i get a path saying
/usr/bin/pip
and the other one says

Python modules for the system python are usually handled by dpkg and apt-get.

That suggests that source venv/bin/activate didn't work. That should add all of the venv executables to the current shell. If you, for example, close the shell after running that and then open a new one you'd have to run it again in the new shell. Try running it again and see what you get for which python, which python3, which pip, and which pip3. I'm wondering if your python installation is aliased differently than the README expects.

And you don't get any errors when running the source command?

Aha, so it can't find the venv. When you created the venv did you get an error? That's the virtualenv -p python3 venv command.

Did you try running the suggested command in there? It would be python3 -m venv venv
It's been a while since I manually set up one up so I guess that's the preferred way now.
