Pasting lines does not respect configured indention

When an indention (tab size) of 2 space characters is configured (either locally for the file or globally in VS Code), inserted lines are always indented by 4 space characters.

Hi, I am having trouble reproducing this issue. Could you please explain how exactly <Init /> was inserted? (was it pasted, typed? etc.)

Does this problem also happen with the latest version of VS Code and the XML extension in the VS Code marketplace?

Hi, you are right. The bug with the exact scenario from above is no longer present in my current version.
Visual Studio Code: 1.44.0
XML Extension: v0.11.0
Node.js: 12.8.1

However, when trying to reproduce the issue, I found a similar one which is still present.
Please, try the following steps to reproduce it:

• rename example1.txt to example1.xml and open the file in VS Code
• select lines 6 and 7 and copy them by pressing Ctrl+c (lines containing Init and Deinit)
• remove line 4 (the one causing the original bug)
• paste copied lines after line 3 by pressing Ctrl+v
  This is my result:

If I am interpreting Example3.txt correctly, the newly pasted text has correct indentation, and the issue is that the indentation on line 6 (<TestDevice name="Head">) is incorrect?

I've tried to reproduce the new problem with all extensions disabled except the XML extension:

You interpreted Example3.txt correctly. The problem was in line 6.

I did some further investigations. However, I was not able to find any possible reason for this bug to happen. I disabled all other extensions, uninstalled and installed the XML extension, even reset all VS Code settings.

I tried the scenario on 3 PCs. 2 PCs (Windows 8.1, Windows 7) showed this issue, 1 PC (Windows 10) not. Could the OS have some influence?

Thank you for the info. In our case, the OS might affect certain functionality involving line delimiters and paths, but strangely I was unable to reproduce the issue on a Windows 8.1 VM.

To further investigate the issue, could you please provide a server trace and your JDK/JRE version?

Here are the steps to get the server trace:

1. In the VS Code settings, set xml.trace.server to verbose
   

2. Open the example file and reproduce the problem

3. Open the OUTPUT panel (Ctrl + J), and set the dropdown to XML Support
   

4. Highlight and copy all of the content (this content is the server trace)

Also, a picture/gif of the problem with editor.render.whitespace setting set to all would be extremely helpful

I generated the server trace on the Windows 8.1 PC with Red Hat OpenJDK 1.8.0_202:

I tried to reproduce the problem on my Windows OS and I have the same problem. It's not a problem with XML Language Server but with indentation rules from TypeScript.

I don't know about this TypeScript indentation rules. @xorye hope you will able to reproduce the problem by seeing my video. Please check you have \r\n line separator in your XML file.

Thank you, I understand the problem. It is indeed an auto-indent problem that happens due to the indentation rules. HTML also has the same behavior: microsoft/vscode#97008

For the time being, a workaround for this issue is to add turn on 'format on paste' for the xml language by adding

    "[xml]": {
        "editor.formatOnPaste": true
    }

to settings.json

Nice, that the you were able to locate the problem.
With the workaround, after inserting the lines the indention is correct.
