things like Jefferson, OR and Willamette Valley don't work because the first includes the proper response but also Jefferson County, OR (which is bigger and gets the priority with my current code and is also listed first in the Nominatim response anyway), and the second doesn't show up at all in the first 40 nominatim results because it's not ranked by them as very likely to be searched compared to various business and stuff with Willamette Valley in the name.

Could look into alternatives to nominatim, but prepackaging the database with the app would get huge quickly unless i was biased to eg US placenames above a certain size.

most functional options might be to:

1. first check for iNaturalist 'places' first to see if there's a match
2. allow user to actually draw a bounding box or enter their own coordinates; either bb or point with radius

also ran into issue where local database, being less complete, makes an odd bias - 'Panama' had a match to Gulf of Panama, even though the obvious exact match would have been preferred and possible to get via OSM
