From Qtcreator 17 (and 18), and with Ubuntu 24.04, clangd highlight errors everywhere

With Qtcreator 16 with the ROS plugin, everything works very well.
However when updating to any superior version (tried 17 and 18) it seems clangd has trouble making sense of the workspace and almost all my code is highlighted in red.
Potentially related (not sure), it seems there is a syntax error in the flags passed to GCC (the COLLECT_GCC_OPTIONS var).

Disappears when switching back to QtCreator 16

Where is this COLLECT_GCC_OPTIONS coming from? It's not part of of the plugin or can be found in the Qt Creator source code.

If I open one of my colcon projects, I get

which is different from yours. I also get the error:

But I don't see what is wrong with the parameters in COLLECT_GCC_OPTIONS. They look valid to me.

Did you try to build the workspace from scratch?

But since your setup is working despite this error, my problem is probably coming from somewhere else.

This has nothing to do with the COLLECT_GCC_OPTIONS, but with the invalid command line parameters to g++-13.

But you are right about the quoting. When I replace '-O3 -g' -x c++ -E -v - with -O3 -g -x c++ -E -v - (note the missing single-quotes), g++-13 runs without an error:

/usr/bin/x86_64-linux-gnu-g++-13 -O3 -g -x c++ -E -v -

it correctly expects the input from stdin, because of the last -:

That looks like a trivial string formatting issue. I just don't know yet if this is caused by the ROS plugin or by some other plugin. I did update parts related to QString handling and conversion recently. If you find the issue before me, send a PR :-)

I am on Ubuntu 24.04 with ROS 2 Jazzy. I am still wondering why this issue has different effects on different systems.

Thanks LLMs... I have a bit more insight. Propably coming from QtCreator, not the plugin. Does not happen when building in debug (nor the error, nor the issue of the clangd highlighting most of my code in red)

 ● The issue is that Qt Creator's GCC toolchain plugin has a bug where it's incorrectly bundling compiler flags when doing feature detection. This is a Qt Creator issue, not
   your ROS plugin.

Workaround: wrapper

  Create a wrapper script that Qt Creator will use:

 ✓ Create /tmp/g++-wrapper.sh

 ✓ Test wrapper script
   $ chmod +x /tmp/g++-wrapper.sh && /tmp/g++-wrapper.sh --version
    └ 5 lines...

 ● Now test if it handles the bundled flags:

 ✓ Test wrapper with bundled flags
   $ /tmp/g++-wrapper.sh '-O3 -DNDEBUG -std=gnu++17 -fPIC' -x c++ -E -v - < /dev/null 2>&1 | head -20
    └ 21 lines...

 ● Perfect! The wrapper works. Now you can:

     - Copy the wrapper to a permanent location:

     sudo cp /tmp/g++-wrapper.sh /usr/local/bin/g++-qtc
     sudo chmod +x /usr/local/bin/g++-qtc

     - In Qt Creator, create a new toolchain:
       - Tools → Options → Kits → Compilers → Add → GCC → C++
       - Set compiler path to /usr/local/bin/g++-qtc
       - Name it "GCC (Qt Creator Workaround)"
     - Update your kit to use this compiler

@doisyg I think I fixed the issue with #551. Can you confirm this with one of the build artifacts from the CI: https://github.com/ros-industrial/ros_qtc_plugin/actions/runs/20320985167?pr=551. It looks like you are using the Debian package, so https://github.com/ros-industrial/ros_qtc_plugin/actions/runs/20320985167/artifacts/4905856334 should parse the flags for GCC correctly.
