Are We Safety Critical Yet?

We should have a fair appraisal of where we are for each safety-critical domain currently that we're confidence enough to speak to.

I imagine that those familiar with particular domains can look over where we currently stand in terms of available resources to make some sort of judgement call.

Automotive

Probably break down by ASIL (Automotive Safety Integrity Level)

• ASIL C - ?%
• ASIL D - ?%

with some rationale for each.

Aerospace

I'm out of my depth here. @adfernandes and others in this space?

We discussed having roughly three categories --

• Coding Guidelines
• Tooling
• Standards

more-or-less corresponding to the current three subcommittees we have.

That way each subcommittee can try to flesh out these sections with relevant documents and references.

Coding Guidelines

• (As-yet unreleased) SAE JA-1020: Recommendations for the Rust Programming Language in Safety-Related Systems
• High Assurance Rust

Tooling

• Ferrocene, the safety-qualified Rust compiler

Standards

• MISRA C:2025 Addendum 6 - Applicability of MISRA C:2025 to theRust Programming Language

I think a Milestones Roadmap would be a great addition.
Additionally, a section that highlights the key benefits of safety-critical guidelines, such as:

• Regulatory and Certification Compliance
• Reduced Debugging and Maintenance Costs
• ..

I also believe these guidelines bring significant economic benefits, including job creation in safety-critical industries.

Another valuable section could focus on major safety-critical failures and their financial impact, such as:

• Toyota Unintended Acceleration Recall (2009-2011) – $5.5+ Billion (9M+ vehicle recalls)
• Volkswagen Dieselgate Scandal (2015) – $33+ Billion (11M+ vehicle recalls)
• General Motors Ignition Switch Software Issue (2014) – $4.1+ Billion
• Honda Airbag Control Software Recall (2020) – $200+ Million
