Windows randomly rearrange/move on their own without any user action

Description

Windows spontaneously start moving and rearranging themselves across the screen without any keyboard or mouse input from me. I am not pressing any shortcuts or interacting with Rectangle Pro when it happens — windows just go crazy and start jumping around randomly on their own.

The behavior is intermittent — it doesn't happen constantly, but when it starts, multiple windows are affected. Quitting Rectangle Pro stops the behavior.

Environment

• macOS: Tahoe 26.3
• Machine: MacBook Pro (Apple Silicon)

Steps to reproduce

1. Use Mac normally with Rectangle Pro running
2. At some random point, windows begin moving/rearranging on their own
3. No specific trigger identified — happens unpredictably

Expected behavior

Windows stay where I put them unless I explicitly move them.

Actual behavior

Windows spontaneously jump to different positions/sizes without any user interaction.

Workaround

Quitting Rectangle Pro stops the behavior entirely, confirming it is the source.

Additional info

• No keyboard shortcuts are being pressed when it occurs
• Happy to provide logs or screen recordings if that would help diagnose

Thanks for reporting. For logging, hold the option key in the menu bar menu and select view logging. Then when it happens, send the logs my way.

Also, it will help if I can load in your configuration. You can export it from the general tab of the settings window.

Thanks Ryan. Just enabled view logging. This is a cool feature - I had been logging everything with console to figure out what was causing it previously. Good to know Rectangle has this. Will let you know when it happens again, and will share my config with you as well.

Great, I'm pretty sure I can pinpoint what's going on with those two things. I've been trying to think through what can cause this, and one scenario that I've just figured out that I need to patch is this:

If you have a Layout set to apply when a window opens, then there might be an unintentional moment where it appears that the window is "new" even when it's not. One such moment that I just found is using App Exposé, where all of the windows go away except the ones of the frontmost app, and when you exit App Exposé and all of the windows come back, the Layout gets applied since they appear to be "new" to Rectangle Pro at that time. Maybe you're seeing something like this?

Great! The easiest would be to save and upload the logs as a text file here on GitHub. Your configuration file would also help, if you don’t mind uploading that as well.

Thanks! These logs show the automatic move/resize occurring when the dock is moved/resized, for the setting Adjust windows when the Dock size or location is changed.

This tells me that perhaps windows are either moving when the dock is not actually being changed or they are moving to incorrect sizes and locations?

Thanks. I can tell you that I’m not changing the dock size or moving the dock. It just appends all of the sudden - like I am not clicking anything. And the windows move all over the place it seems - like it’s a little hard to describe because there are so many windows and they move to what seems like random places across the different monitors in a flurry. Maybe the logs can sort of paint the picture? Or I can try a screen recording? Please let me know what I can do to help you pinpoint the problem. I can also gladly turn off the setting Adjust windows when the Dock size or location is changed if that would fix it!

Turning off Adjust windows when the Dock size or location is changed should stop this from happening, but if you don't mind providing a screen recording, that would likely help me get to the bottom of it.

The logic in Rectangle Pro gets triggered by any adjustments to the displays, where it then calculates dock changes based on current displays. Are you using any kind of display management software? Can you trace when this started happening back to the installation of anything else?

We're actually seeing two bugs here: one with the display adjustment being triggered at seemingly random times, and one where moving the windows is traversing displays and it shouldn't.
