AP: 'b'->'v' sanskrit global changes

In corrections to 'AP' cdsl dictionary, many systematic errors have been noticed but only partially changed. See ap_global_san.txt for a partial set of suggested global changes.

If we (@Andhrabharati, @aumsanskrit, and @funderburkjim) make such global changes, this will be more efficient than the current individual changes submitted by Scott and 'installed' by Jim.

There are several technical obstacles to doing these changes:

• false positives (we want to avoid changing something that should not be change
• How to present instances of suggested changes to detect false positives.
• slp1 spellings which are used in ap.txt to represent Sanskrit text.
• the version of ap.txt being used -- this is a moving target

Since the most common corrections involve changes of 'b' to 'v' (in slp1 spelling), let's start there.

Are there any in ap_global_san.txt list that are safe to do 'as is'?
e.g., Is it 'safe' to make the global change "Bab" -> "Bav" in the
the Sanskrit text portions of ap.txt?

Maybe Andhrabharati or Scott will have suggestions how they can help
in this worthy goal.

One suggestion that I have made in regard to making Global Changes via "Search/Replace" is to safely restrict the scope of such Global Changes by introducing an initial and/or following "Blank Space" so as to prevent "ativyāptiḥ". So for example in regard to:

"Bab" -> "Bav"

It would be "safer" to make the Global Correction as: " Bab" -> " Bav" (with an initial blank space), thus preventing any "tampering" in the interior of words and compounds etc.

I would suggest doing much more in AP57, firstly to bring it to the 'Prime level' [in BOLD] at the CDSL home page, which status had been allotted to AP90 earlier (along with MW).

[This 'Prime level' has been transferred to AP57, without getting many improvements into it that AP90 has got.]

Another GREAT technique to use for Global Changes is as follows:

1. Find all possible combinations of letters that would suffer from "over-pervasion" of a particular Global Change.

2. Then perform a "preliminary" Global Change on those combinations of letters discovered in Step 1.
   For example, if "Bab" -> " Bav", runs the risk of adversely effecting "bh", then take "bh" out of the "Locus of Operation", by doing a preliminary change such as: "bh" -> "[-1-]".

3. Continue with Step 2 until all possible cases of "over-pervasion" have been safely transformed into a unique coding, thereby eliminating any chance of "over-pervasion" from the intended Target Global Change, such as: "Bab" -> " Bav".

4. After the intended Global Change has been successively executed, then "Revert" all the unique codings from Step 3, back to their proper lettering.

The AP advanced search could be used. Here's the setup for the "Bab" example. I've used 'roman' (= iast) for Sanskrit text.

The 'bhab' sanskrit text instances can be cycled through using either

• the browser Find (Ctrl-F) or
• The 'highlight' feature ('< = >")

Someone needs to cycle through these instances.
If there are any that should NOT be changed (to iast "bhav"), just copy the text string and put that into a temporary text file.
When done, post those exceptions here.
Then, I can install the global changes.

Here are some approx. counts on the whole--

I can definitely change these in the text file directly (wherever needed) and post for your perusal; but, I was looking for your response to my post above about "many improvements" done in AP90 that are to be done in AP57 to make it elevated to a 'prime level'; you may recall when & why I had asked to mark AP90 thus, similar to MW!

I think the global corrections discussed in this issue should be done now, as this will
have a favorable impact on Scott's ongoing review of AP.

It would be great if you could handle these global changes now. In that regard, your counts
add up to 2302.
But these counts are based on a version of ap.txt prior to the recent ap work of 20251126

So be sure to use the latest version of ap.txt for these global changes. Also, it will make life easier if
you do not change the number of lines in ap.txt while doing the global changes.

My intent is to process Scott's corrections from other dictionaries (lrv, shs, etc.) in the batches
of 20250418 and 20251126. When this is done, and the global changes of this issue are done for ap,
then my work on processing Scott's changes will be done for now -- and @drdhaval2785 will handle
Scott's corrections submitted after 20251126.

Then I will be ready to work with you to get AP57 up to "prime level" !

I had used the file as of 17th Oct. (above) and the counts vis-à-vis 13th Dec. stand as under (2302 vs. 1796)--
[i.e. about 22% were handled in the latest workouts by Jim]

Will do these after two days, but well before you finish tackling other lexicons.

Probably, you may also think of "doing" the 1000+ cases posted by Dr. Dhaval individually at the start of the year (thus greatly helping him)!!

Then only the non-Scott corrections would be remaining till 20251126 for Dhaval, when he joins you in Jan. '26.

The global change "tb" -> "tv", should be worthwhile, if you are able to restrict this to Sanskrit only.
Of course, "tb" is a common pairing in English.
