Description
I recently discovered the following thread of a user having crashes when using a CPU that had AVX(1) but not AVX2:
This reminded me of how I myself have a legendary (for budget systems) dual-core Haswell Pentium G3258 - basically a multiplier unlocked i3 without SMT/hyperthreading and downgraded integrated graphics...and no AVX(1) nor AVX2 support (I keep it as a sort of backup CPU to both a Haswell Xeon and a Broadwell Xeon that I much more recently upgraded systems to on the cheap)
The thing is though, Intel in their infinite wisdom didn't enable AVX support full-fat desktop LGA115x/1200 Pentium CPUs (not to be confused with the formerly-named "Atom" CPUs that Intel later rebranded as Pentium and/or Pentium Silver) until 12th gen/Alder Lake(!!!) in 2022 which were the final line of desktop CPUs branded "Pentium" before being replaced by the nondescript "Intel processor" branding.
It may also be worth noting that Pentiums gained SMT/hyperthreaded in early 2017 with the similarly legendary G4560 as this was also when i3 CPUs were still dual core, making the difference between a (non-Atom derived) Pentium and an i3 basically boil down to AVX support and nothing else (the G46xx models even had the full-fat integrated graphics that the i3 chips had) until Intel introduced into quad core i3 CPUs late that year. And considering the infamous 14nm++++++++ this mean that there was minimal difference in Pentium CPUs for 5 years.
