Where is the curve in the vd plot?

I'm just trying the terminal plot function – and I get in the result the axes, but no curve:

Do I need to set special colours for the plots?

You do actually see a handful of green dots near the bottom axis, and then another one at the top of the screen. You are plotting fee/charge*100 vs charge which may not be what you want. If these are transactions, type the date column as date with @ and then make it a key column with !, before moving the cursor to the column you want to plot and pressing . to plot it.

I don't have a date column, just charge & fee:

Then I made charge the x-axis and the percentage column the active col:

Then I hit . for plot:

I would expect dots going down from 10/8 to 200/5.5, but I don't see this.

What do I do wrong?

Oh, did you mean you expect to see the datapoints to be connected by lines or a curve? Visidata does not do that. Visidata plots are a simple scatterplot. They only plot individual data points, and do not connect them by any curve.

If you are okay with viewing a graph in a GUI instead of just a terminal, @cool-RR wrote a graph exporting tool that uses matplotlib, it looks to me from the demo images that it may be able to connect data points.

As a side note, judging from your screenshot, it's from a version 2.x of Visidata. In those versions, the label 1:fee/charge*100 is located on the data portion of the graph, where it can cover data points. Version 3.x graphs have the labels in their own space, to avoid obscuring data points.

I strongly recommend upgrading to Visidata 3.3, which has many bugfixes and improvements.

Good point. I did the further screenshots with V3 at home, but at work it is super hard for me to upgrade (no internet access), so I try to stick with V2...
