Using GEOquery with private data

I have a private GEO and am wondering if there is an implementation in the GEOquery package to access it with the token provided.  
My attempts specifying the authorization using httr and curl packages haven't been successful. 

For all pathways I try (GEOquery::getGEO, httr::GET, and curl::curl_download) give me the same HTTP error (404)
