Restore only checks for app backups

1. I made a backup of my media files in Android 14 (matrixx os), but when i tried to restore them in A15 (same rom) I'm getting an error "we couldn't find any backups at this location" even tho there's clearly a backup (along with a .nomedia file and .snapshot file).

Is this tool not backwards compatible or is it a bug?

I backed up to local storage ,moved it to pc then moved to phone again, I let it make its own folder then moved the backup inside.

yes, just files.

I think the bug here is that for historic reasons we only check for the existence of app backups to validate the backup location.

You should be able to work around this by doing an app backup as well.

Unfortunately that didn't work, I've spent some time trying to make new backups then renaming the old one with the same name,tried renaming the .seedsnap file to the new one , but it just never recognizes it.

You should never mess with the backup files. Even copying them around manually is already stretching things. Hard to debug this, if you mess around with the files.

After almost a week of trying and trying endlessly, I finally managed to restore my files.

For anyone facing issues with restoring files without app backups, here's what worked for me:

1. Go to SeedVault and select "Make New Backup" — this time, create an app backup any apps really since as grote mentionned earlier "we check for the existence of app backups to validate the backup location".
2. After that move your media backup folder into the ./SeedVaultBackup folder.
3. In your phone settings, clear SeedVault's app data so that it prompts you again to either restore or make a new backup.
4. Select "Restore" and enter the code associated with your original media backup (not the new app backup you just created).
5. Skip the app restoration step — it will fail anyway, stating the code is incorrect.

If all goes well, you should now be able to restore your media files successfully.

I wish the devs would make a new tool that lets you decrypt your files on pc since the existing one doesn't support storage backups and isn't targeted for latest versions anyways.

Great you could work around it, but let's keep this open, because only checking for app backups is a bug we should fix.
