Injecting a sequence of keystrokes

I think this is a common question but I can't find the answer. I want to inject a series of keystrokes when I press a key. Basically, I can't get GIMP scripting to work so it's easier just to send a sequence of 6 keys to the program. I can see that it's not possible to chain key sequences directly, is there any other way to achieve this?
