Ralph Engine & Claude SDK Integration - Implementation Summary

Overview

Successfully implemented the core Ralph Engine and Claude SDK integration for Constellation (Ralph-as-a-Service). This implementation transforms the simple while :; do cat PROMPT.md | agent ; done pattern into a robust, scalable, and production-ready orchestration platform.

  • Status tracking (idle, running, paused, stopped, completed, error)

3. Circuit Breaker

Automatically stops loops when:

  • Too many consecutive failures (default: 5)

5. Tool System

Registry:

  • 6 default tools: bash, read, write, edit, glob, grep

6. Agent Orchestration

  • Agent creation with hierarchy support (parent/child for sub-agents)
  • Status management across lifecycle
  • Conversation history tracking
  • Metadata tracking (tokens, cost, iterations, timestamps)
  • Event-driven state updates

7. Event Bus

Architecture Highlights

Data Flow

User → IPC → RalphEngine → RalphLoop → ClaudeClient → Claude API
                    ↓            ↓            ↓
                EventBus ← CircuitBreaker ← CostTracker
                    ↓
            Renderer (React)

Loop Execution Flow

1. Load PROMPT.md from filesystem
2. Build message context from agent history
3. Call Claude API with tools (streaming)
4. Process stream:
   - Text chunks → emit agent_output_chunk
   - Tool calls → execute via ToolExecutor
5. Record cost and usage
6. Check circuit breaker conditions
7. Check budget limits
8. Add results to history
9. Repeat

Safety Mechanisms

  1. Circuit Breaker: Prevents infinite loops
  2. Budget Enforcement: Prevents cost overruns
  3. Sandbox: Restricts file/command access
  4. Timeouts: Prevents hung operations
  5. Error Recovery: Exponential backoff on failures

Integration Points

With Existing Codebase

The implementation integrates with:

  • Database (src/main/database/) - Ready for state persistence
  • IPC Handlers (src/main/ipc/) - Ready for renderer communication
  • Config Manager (src/main/services/config/) - Configuration loading
  • Keychain Service (src/main/services/security/) - API key storage

Required Dependencies

{
  "dependencies": {
    "@anthropic-ai/sdk": "^0.x.x",
    "uuid": "^9.x.x"
  },
  "devDependencies": {
    "@types/uuid": "^9.x.x"
  }
}

Usage Example

import { ClaudeClient } from './claude';
import { RalphEngine } from './services/ralph';
import { AgentOrchestrator } from './services/agent';
import { getEventBus } from './services/EventBus';

// Initialize
const eventBus = getEventBus();
const claudeClient = new ClaudeClient();
await claudeClient.initialize(apiKey);

const orchestrator = new AgentOrchestrator(defaultConfig, eventBus);
const engine = new RalphEngine(claudeClient, engineConfig, eventBus);

// Subscribe to real-time events
eventBus.subscribe('agent_output_chunk', (event) => {
  console.log(event.data.chunk);
});

eventBus.subscribe('circuit_breaker_triggered', (event) => {
  console.log('Circuit breaker:', event.data.reason);
});

// Create and start
const agent = await orchestrator.createAgent({
  projectId: project.id,
  name: 'Main Agent',
});

await engine.startLoop(project, agent);

// Control
await engine.pauseLoop(project.id);
await engine.resumeLoop(project.id);
await engine.stopLoop(project.id);
