shadcn/ui customization: direct edits or wrapper-only approach?

For small Tailwind tweaks, do you customize the components directly, or keep them pristine and only expose them via wrappers/composed components?

Feels like a tension between “you own the code” and “easy upstream updates” when using the CLI.

I would like to know how people use Shadcn
