EOFerror with empty eventIdFile

Just wanted to chime in here to say we get a lot of empty eventIdFiles over here, and each time it's completely blocking the daemon from restarting. I've made a fix on our implementation using a try/except for EOFerror, but your PR would probably be good too.

Even better, I'd love to figure out what results in an empty file.
