The general cause of this or at least I found was the Sync root. This only happens, when there are already files in the folder before creating the Sync root. Do me a favour, before you reconnect again, delete every placeholder that is in "C:\Users\userprofile\RemoteDevice" considering you won't need it and if you have saved some files just back it up somewhere else. Make sure to keep it empty, and reconnect again. This shouldn't happen this time or again.
it's only a temp fix, I should find some other solution to this crash but apparently hard to replicate.

Does this keep a local copy on your PC? Id rather only use it to view files on my phone and copy what i need

No, it doesn't keep a local copy, although it might look like it does; it's like caching the files on your desktop basically. It might show the original size when you look it up, but it doesn't take any actual space unless you save it. DISCONNECT the device before deleting anything from that folder just so you don't lose anything on your phone.
