Get static compilation working in a container of some sort

People are having trouble compiling this. Setting up a container (probably Docker) to build it in might help. I'll need to iron out the details of what versions of each library is required, and then hopefully out of the container we can get statically linked executables.

Speaking as a C++ illiterate, still curious if there's no way to just compile the whole thing into a single binary that Just Works^TM.
