I noticed the way prom-client and prometheus works id need to keep every label combination in ram forever doesn't that kind of defeat the purpose of having prometheus in the first place?

I was wondering if i collected metrics say ever minute could i then clear it every hour and it not cause any issues?

Otel generally has this same problem.

Gauges yes. Increments are a bit more problematic if you can’t do deltas. Histograms moreso.

You definitely want to be careful about cardinality. I have some changes that are in trunk but unreleased which reduce the space complexity a bit but it’s definitely a concern.
