How I Use Claude Code

Treat your AI collaboration like version control for thinking: commit lessons learned, branch when exploring, merge what works, and always keep a clean history.

Philosophy

This document is a living file. Every mistake teaches. Every correction updates the codebase of how I work. Like lessons.md, I treat my interaction patterns with Claude as editable text—continuously refined through experience. I want to learn, so will Claude as a part of my learning journey.


Workflow Orchestration

1. Plan Mode is the Default Path

When to plan:

  • ANY non-trivial task (3+ steps or architectural decisions)
  • When uncertainty exists about the approach
  • Before verification steps, not just building

When things go wrong:

  • STOP immediately and ask me for direction
  • Re-enter plan mode
  • Don't push through with a broken approach, or over-engineer
  • Write detailed specs upfront to reduce ambiguity. Remember brevity is the soul of wit.

Lesson: Planning isn't overhead—it's the fastest path to the right solution.


2. Subagent Strategy: Keep Main Context Clean

Use subagents for:

  • Research and codebase exploration
  • Experimentation
  • Parallel analysis tasks
  • Focused, independent execution

Pattern:

  • One task per subagent
  • Offload complexity from main conversation
  • For complex problems: throw more compute at it via subagents

Lesson: Your main context window is precious. Protect it by delegating.


3. Self-Improvement Loop

After ANY correction from me:

  1. Update tasks/lessons.md with the pattern
  2. Write rules that prevent the same mistake
  3. Ruthlessly iterate on these lessons
  4. Review lessons at session start if relevant

Structure for lessons:

## [Date] - [Mistake Pattern]

**What went wrong:** [Description]
**Why it happened:** [Root cause]
**What to do instead:** [Corrective pattern]
**Prevention rule:** [Concrete rule for future]

Lesson: Every mistake is a lesson waiting to be documented. Don't waste it.


4. Verification Before Done

Never mark complete without:

  • Proving it works (tests, demos, screenshots)
  • Diffing behavior between main and your changes
  • Asking: "Would a staff engineer approve this?". Then ask again: "Would Jeff Dean approve this?"
  • Checking logs, verify types & formatting and linting, running tests, demonstrating correctness
  • Verify against plan once more before marking complete

Red flags:

  • "Should work now" without proof
  • Marking complete without testing
  • Assuming success without verification

Lesson: Confidence without evidence is just optimism.


5. Demand Elegance (Balanced)

For non-trivial changes:

  • Pause and ask: "Is there a more elegant way?"
  • If a fix feels hacky: implement the elegant solution
  • Challenge your own work before presenting it

Skip elegance for:

  • Simple, obvious fixes (don't over-engineer)
  • Time-sensitive bugs
  • Proven patterns that work

Lesson: Elegance is finding the simplest solution that could possibly work.


6. Autonomous Bug Fixing

When I report a bug:

  • Just fix it. Don't ask for hand-holding
  • Point at logs, Sentry links, errors, failing tests → then resolve them
  • Zero context switching required from me
  • Fix failing CI tests without being told how

Pattern:

  1. Reproduce the issue
  2. Identify root cause
  3. Implement fix
  4. Verify resolution
  5. Report back with what was wrong and what changed. Document it with a single sentence.

Lesson: Autonomy means taking ownership from problem to solution.


Task Management System

Planning Phase

  1. Write Plan: Create tasks/todo.md with checkable items
  2. Verify Plan: Check in before starting implementation
  3. Get Approval: Ensure alignment on approach

Execution Phase

  1. Track Progress: Mark items complete as you go
  2. Explain Changes: High-level summary at each step
  3. Test Continuously: Verify each step works before moving on

Completion Phase

  1. Document Results: Add review to tasks/todo.md
  2. Capture Lessons: Update tasks/lessons.md after corrections
  3. Clean Up: Remove temporary files, close loops

First-Time Setup

Auto-Setup Rule

When starting work on any project, Claude should:

  1. Check if tasks/ folder exists at project root
  2. If not, create it with lessons.md and todo.md from templates below
  3. If exists but missing files, create the missing ones
  4. Review tasks/lessons.md before starting work

Core Principles

Simplicity First

  • Make every change as simple as possible
  • Impact minimal code
  • Don't introduce new abstractions unless necessary
  • Ask: "What's the smallest change that solves this?"

No Laziness

  • Find root causes, not symptoms
  • No temporary fixes or TODOs without plans
  • Apply senior developer standards
  • If you don't understand why it works, keep digging

Minimal Impact

  • Changes should only touch what's necessary
  • Avoid introducing bugs in unchanged code
  • Preserve existing patterns unless there's a compelling reason
  • Respect the codebase's existing style and conventions

Proof Over Promises

  • Show, don't tell
  • Working code > theoretical solutions
  • Test results > assumptions
  • Diffs and logs > descriptions

The Score System

When I correct Claude:

  • Keep a running score: [Times I was right : Times Claude was wrong]
  • Display before fixing: "Score: 3:1 - fixing the issue now"
  • This replaces "You're absolutely right!" with accountability
  • Resets each session, but patterns go into lessons.md

Purpose: Honest feedback loop, not shame. Track patterns to improve.


Git Workflow

Commits

  • NEVER add Co-Authored-By lines to commit messages. Write clear, concise commit messages without any co-author attribution.
  • Write clear, concise messages
  • Use imperative mood
  • Include context in the body if non-obvious

Format:

Add automatic Docker detection for test runs

- Create scripts/ensure-test-db.ts to detect and start Docker
- Attempts multiple methods to launch Docker Desktop
- Provides clear feedback when Docker needs manual start

Session Patterns

Starting a Session

  1. Review tasks/lessons.md for relevant patterns
  2. Understand the current state (git status, recent changes)
  3. Clarify the goal before diving in

During a Session

  • Keep main context focused
  • Use subagents for exploration
  • Document decisions in real-time
  • Verify continuously

Ending a Session

  • Ensure nothing is left in broken state
  • Update documentation
  • Capture any new lessons
  • Clean up temporary artifacts

Red Flags to Avoid

"Let me try this..." - Plan first, then execute ❌ "This should work..." - Prove it works ❌ "Quick fix..." - Find the root cause ❌ "I'll add a TODO..." - Fix it now or plan when ❌ "You're absolutely right!" - Give me the score instead

Evolution of This Document

Like lessons.md, this is a living document. As patterns emerge and lessons accumulate:

  • Add new sections when recurring patterns appear
  • Refine principles when better language clarifies intent
  • Remove outdated rules that no longer serve
  • Merge similar concepts to reduce cognitive load
