ERROR: Java was not found in /usr/lib/jvm/bellsoft-java8-amd64.

Hello i am trying to install Autopsy on debian 10. I am getting this error, i have re done the java steps still facing this issue i have even restarted my machine. Really appreciate if you could help.

Are you using:

export JAVA_HOME=/usr/lib/jvm/bellsoft-java8-full-amd64

as in the revised instructions at: https://github.com/sleuthkit/autopsy/blob/develop/Running_Linux_OSX.txt?

I have gone through the steps again. still, I find the same error.
One more thing I have noticed is that you have used sleuthkit-java_4.7.0-1_amd64.deb. the official autopsy website is downloading sleuthkit-java_4.8.0-1_amd64.deb, 4.8 version and as mentioned in the install txt we have to install a specific version of sleuthkit.

I have tried installing following the steps mentioned on the txt on my parrot os which comes with an installed version of an autopsy. But I install manually following the txt it shows the same error.

What do you see when you run the 'java -version' check listed in the instructions?

i tried nothing shows up.

Well that's your problem right there. If you don't set this environment variable (illustrated by @rcordovano above and in the Running_Linux_OSX.txt file) the unix_setup.sh script will fail.

Well at least you are passed the original problem you were having.
Now you are having problems copying the sleuthkit java bindings JAR file. I think the problem is that there is a space in your path (i.e. "Autopsy files") and it looks like the setup script cannot handle it.
Try renaming that folder so that it does not contain a space.

PS: There should be no need to perform any of this as a super user.

I wrote a guide that might help you. It was a lot of trial and error to discover the issues and solutions in macOS. You could try the instructions in the guide, and if you are successful, maybe you could report back the step that resolved the issue so that the developers can identify the issue.

I am using Debian 10 not a mac os

In Ubuntu the JAVA_HOME variable can also be set this way:

echo "export JAVA_HOME=/usr/lib/jvm/bellsoft-java8-full-amd64" | sudo tee /etc/profile.d/bellsoft.sh

it will require a logout and a login for the change to take effect. I'm not sure about Debian, but if the folder /etc/profile.d/ exists it should work also.

The other option (which I prefer) is to edit this file
<install_dir>/Autopsy-<version>/etc/autopsy.conf
and add:
jdkhome="/usr/lib/jvm/bellsoft-java8-full-amd64/jre"
