Is it possible to convert a bridged Bluesky account into a regular account?

Howdy!

For a long time now I've used Bridgy Fed to cross-post things from the fediverse over to Bluesky. This is all well and good.

Somewhat unexpectedly, my Bluesky account has gotten a bit of a following over the last half a year or so. Unfortunately, Bridgy Fed does not seem to forward anything that aren't direct replies to my posts, so new messages directed at me or mentions in threads never get seen and I'm unable to respond to them. This isn't so good.

As begruding as it is (I have a lot of qualms with Bluesky's management), I think I need to start using Bluesky directly. Is there a way for me to 'claim' the account that Bridgy Fed created and begin using it as a bog-standard Bluesky account?

Having said that, though, @-mentions, indirect replies, etc from bridged accounts should still get bridged back and notify you. I'm guessing the ones you're missing are from non-bridged accounts...which we stilll do notify you for, just over DM: https://fed.brid.gy/docs#dms . Maybe look at one or two that you missed and see if they're coming from bridged or non-bridged accounts, and if the latter, whether you got a DM from @bsky.brid.gy@bsky.brid.gy that you missed?

Responses to my replies, responses directly including my handle, and replies-of-replies from bridged accounts didn't come through.

Thanks! I see two there that we should ideally have sent DM notifs for:

• https://bsky.app/profile/visitmy.website/post/3mfvkpgkh722s is a bridged user replying to a non-bridged user, which is why we didn't bridge it...which is fine, but it also @-mentioned you, so we should have still sent a notif.
• https://bsky.app/profile/therealnooshu.bsky.social/post/3mfuesmuyns2l is a reply to your own reply that you posted through Bridgy Fed's web UI. We're not currently notifying for replies to web-UI-replies, but we should!

I've noticed the same issue happen many more times since, so it doesn't seem to be an isolated case.

The answer is now yes. Yes you can.

The big caveat here is that Bluesky does NOT allow accounts that originate from outside of their PDS to migrate into it, so you cannot migrate a Bridgy Fed user directly to Bluesky.

Instead you need to find a third-party PDS to migrate to. Blacksky operates a few PDSes that might be viable starting points, or you can go exploring and find one with open registration in this directory of non-Bluesky PDSes.
