There's a variant of the English (and Porter) stemmers described on the website which adds a couple of rules to improve stemming of "Early Modern English" (e.g. Shakespeare, Dickens, the King James Bible): https://snowballstem.org/texts/earlyenglish.html
It's probably worth including this as a stemmer in the distribution rather than forcing people who want to use it to patch english.sbl themselves and build a new Snowball. We can create a vocabulary list by downloading Shakespeare, Dickens and the King James Bible and collating a list of words which occur more than N times.
