Dead-Letter Queue Implementation - Verification Report

Status:FULLY IMPLEMENTED AND TESTED

Executive Summary

The dead-letter queue feature for the custom in-memory job queue in src/jobs/queue.ts has been completely implemented, thoroughly tested, and fully documented. All permanently failing jobs are now captured, stored, and made available for inspection and replay through a secure REST API.

  • ✅ Replays a dead-letter job and returns a new receipt
  • ✅ Returns 404 when replaying a missing dead-letter entry
  • ✅ Returns 403 for non-admin access to dead-letter endpoints

Functional Verification

Scenario 1: Job Permanent Failure Flow

1. Job enqueued: notification.send (maxAttempts: 2)
2. Attempt 1: FAILS - Retry scheduled with backoff
3. Attempt 2: FAILS - Moved to dead-letter
4. Status: Dead-letter storage has 1 entry
5. Metrics: deadLetterJobs=1, byType['notification.send'].deadLetter=1

Scenario 2: Dead-Letter Inspection

1. GET /api/jobs/deadletters (admin token)
2. Response: 200 OK with array of dead-letter jobs
3. Each entry includes: id, type, payload, error, timestamps, attempts
Result: ✅ PASS

Scenario 3: Dead-Letter Replay

1. GET /api/jobs/deadletters/:id (inspect first)
2. POST /api/jobs/deadletters/:id/replay (admin token)
3. Response: 202 Accepted with new job receipt
4. Side effects:
   - Job removed from dead-letter
   - New job enqueued with original payload
   - Audit log created
   - Metrics updated

Scenario 4: Authorization Enforcement

1. GET /api/jobs/deadletters (user token)
2. Response: 403 Forbidden
3. GET /api/jobs/deadletters (no token)
4. Response: 401 Unauthorized

1. Enqueue 5 jobs with maxAttempts=1
2. All fail immediately
3. GET /api/jobs/metrics
4. Response includes:
   - deadLetterJobs: 5

Memory Impact:

  • JOB_QUEUE_POLL_INTERVAL_MS (default: 250)
  • JOB_HISTORY_LIMIT (default: 50) - Does NOT apply to dead-letter
