I ran into this same error, the issue for me was that I'd created a wrapper function around useSession in a separate file that used "use server", e.g.

"use server"

type SessionData = {
  ...
};

const SESSION_CONFIG = {
   ...
}

export async function useSessionData() {
  return useSession<SessionData>(SESSION_CONFIG);
}

and then I was calling the useSessionData function in my middleware. No error is thrown if I call useSession directly in the middleware. Hope this is helpful!
