Can't set Shipstation Notify username & password without also having XML integration endpoint available

In ShipStation it seems that it the ShipStation UI requires an XML endpoint be active in order to set a username & password for the Shipment Notify API endpoint. If Shipstation requires that the XML endpoint be live in order to set the username & password then XML integration isn't really optional even though you we are using the API for integration. It seems that maybe we need to:

1. Turn on XML integration
2. Set username & password in ShipStation custom store settings
3. Turn off the XML integration so that shipstation doesnt' use it.

Maybe there's another way to accomplish this, can we set the username & password by API? Maybe there's a way to do this but documentation is needed?
