Implementation Summary: Issues #723-726 - TTS Security, Performance & Observability

Overview

This implementation addresses four critical issues in the TTS service:

  • Issue #723: Request authentication via API key header
  • Issue #724: Audio caching with configurable TTL
  • Issue #725: Input text length validation to prevent DoS
  • Issue #726: W3C Trace Context propagation for distributed tracing

All changes are in a single branch: fix/723-724-725-726-tts-security-performance-observability

Changes Made

1. Issue #723: Request Authentication

Files Modified: services/tts/src/server.ts, services/tts/src/TTSService.ts

Implementation:

  • Added authentication middleware that validates Authorization: Bearer <api-key> header
  • Unauthenticated requests to TTS endpoints return 401 Unauthorized
  • Authentication is configurable via TTS_API_KEY environment variable (comma-separated list)
  • Health check endpoints (/health, /health/ready, /health/live) bypass authentication
  • Supports both API key and JWT authentication (JWT already implemented in TTSService)

Configuration:

export TTS_API_KEY="key1,key2,key3"

API Usage:

curl -X POST http://localhost:3000/tts/generate \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer key1" \
  -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -d '{"text": "Hello", "voiceId": "el-rachel-en"}'

Error Response:

{
  "error": "Invalid API key"
}

2. Issue #724: Audio Caching

Files Modified: services/tts/src/TTSService.ts, services/tts/src/server.ts

Implementation:

  • Audio cached by SHA256 hash of provider:voiceId:text
  • Cache TTL configurable via TTS_CACHE_TTL_MS (default: 24 hours = 86400000ms)
  • Max cache entries configurable via TTS_CACHE_MAX_ENTRIES (default: 1000)
  • Cache bypass via Cache-Control: no-cache header for testing
  • Cache metrics exposed via service.getCacheMetrics()
  • Automatic eviction of oldest entries when max capacity reached

Configuration:

export TTS_CACHE_TTL_MS=86400000        # 24 hours
export TTS_CACHE_MAX_ENTRIES=1000

Cache Bypass:

curl -X POST http://localhost:3000/tts/generate \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer key1" \
  -H "Cache-Control: no-cache" \
  -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -d '{"text": "Hello", "voiceId": "el-rachel-en"}'

Cache Key Formula:

sha256(provider + ":" + voiceId + ":" + text)

Benefits:

  • Reduces API calls to ElevenLabs/Google Cloud TTS
  • Improves latency for repeated requests
  • Reduces costs by avoiding duplicate provider calls

3. Issue #725: Input Text Length Validation

Files Modified: services/tts/src/TTSService.ts

Implementation:

  • Input text length capped at 5000 characters (configurable via MAX_INPUT_LENGTH)
  • Requests exceeding limit return 400 Bad Request
  • Validation enforced in sanitizeInput() function
  • SSML/XML tags stripped to prevent injection attacks
  • Whitespace normalized

Configuration:

export const MAX_INPUT_LENGTH = 5000; // Can be made configurable

Error Response:

{
  "error": "Input text exceeds maximum length of 5000 characters"
}

Validation Steps:

  1. Check if text is non-empty string
  2. Enforce max length (5000 chars)
  3. Strip SSML/XML tags
  4. Normalize whitespace

Security Benefits:

  • Prevents DoS attacks via extremely long inputs
  • Prevents excessive Google Cloud API costs
  • Prevents high memory usage
  • Prevents request timeouts

4. Issue #726: W3C Trace Context Propagation

Files Modified: services/tts/src/server.ts, services/tts/package.json

Implementation:

  • Extract traceparent header from incoming requests using W3C Trace Context propagation
  • Create child spans linked to parent trace from API service
  • Enable end-to-end trace correlation between API and TTS services
  • Spans exported to OpenTelemetry collector

Dependencies Added:

"@opentelemetry/core": "^1.21.0"

Middleware:

const propagator = new W3CTraceContextPropagator();
app.use((req: Request, res: Response, next: NextFunction) => {
  const tracer = trace.getTracer("tts-service");
  const ctx = propagator.extract(context.active(), req.headers, {...});
  context.with(ctx, () => {
    const span = tracer.startSpan(`${req.method} ${req.path}`);
    res.on("finish", () => span.end());
    context.with(trace.setSpan(ctx, span), () => {
      next();
    });
  });
});

Trace Context Propagation:

curl -X POST http://localhost:3000/tts/generate \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer key1" \
  -H "traceparent: 00-0af7651916cd43dd8448eb211c80319c-b7ad6b7169203331-01" \
  -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -d '{"text": "Hello", "voiceId": "el-rachel-en"}'

Trace Format:

traceparent: 00-<trace-id>-<span-id>-<trace-flags>

Benefits:

  • End-to-end trace visibility across services
  • Easier debugging of distributed requests
  • Performance monitoring across service boundaries
  • Correlation of logs and metrics
