Issue #493: API Security Audit - Implementation Complete

Executive Summary

Issue: #493 - Audit and enforce auth/ownership checks across Next.js API routes
Status:COMPLETE
Date: 2026-04-27
Critical Vulnerabilities Fixed: 4
High Priority Issues Fixed: 1
Tests Added: 50+ security test cases

What Was Done

1. Comprehensive Security Audit ✅

Created client/SECURITY_AUDIT_MATRIX.md documenting:

  • All 18 API routes analyzed
  • Authentication requirements per route
  • Ownership check status
  • Rate limiting coverage
  • Security vulnerabilities identified
  • Recommended patterns and best practices

2. Critical Security Fixes ✅

Fix #1: Tag Assignment Ownership Check

File: client/app/api/subscriptions/[id]/tags/route.ts

Before: No ownership verification - users could assign tags to ANY subscription

// VULNERABLE CODE
export async function POST(request, { params }) {
  const { id } = await params
  return createApiRoute(async (_req, context, user) => {
    if (!user) throw new Error("User not authenticated")
    const { tag_id } = await validateRequestBody(request, bodySchema)
    await addTagToSubscription(id, tag_id) // ❌ No ownership check
    return createSuccessResponse({ assigned: true }, HttpStatus.OK, context.requestId)
  }, { requireAuth: true, rateLimit: RateLimiters.standard })(request)
}

After: Explicit ownership verification for both subscription and tag

// SECURE CODE
export async function POST(request, { params }) {
  const { id } = await params
  return createApiRoute(async (_req, context, user) => {
    if (!user) throw ApiErrors.unauthorized()
    const { tag_id } = await validateRequestBody(request, bodySchema)

    const supabase = await createClient()

    // ✅ Verify subscription ownership
    const { data: subscription, error: subError } = await supabase
      .from("subscriptions")
      .select("user_id")
      .eq("id", id)
      .single()

    if (subError || !subscription) {
      throw ApiErrors.notFound("Subscription")
    }

    checkOwnership(user.id, subscription.user_id)

    // ✅ Verify tag ownership
    const { data: tag, error: tagError } = await supabase
      .from("subscription_tags")
      .select("user_id")
      .eq("id", tag_id)
      .single()

    if (tagError || !tag) {
      throw ApiErrors.notFound("Tag")
    }

    checkOwnership(user.id, tag.user_id)

    await addTagToSubscription(id, tag_id)
    return createSuccessResponse({ assigned: true }, HttpStatus.OK, context.requestId)
  }, { requireAuth: true, rateLimit: RateLimiters.standard })(request)
}

Impact: Prevents cross-user data manipulation

Fix #2: Tag Removal Ownership Check

File: client/app/api/subscriptions/[id]/tags/[tagId]/route.ts

Before: No ownership verification - users could remove tags from ANY subscription

// VULNERABLE CODE
export async function DELETE(request, { params }) {
  const { id, tagId } = await params
  return createApiRoute(async (_req, context, user) => {
    if (!user) throw new Error("User not authenticated")
    await removeTagFromSubscription(id, tagId) // ❌ No ownership check
    return createSuccessResponse({ removed: true }, HttpStatus.OK, context.requestId)
  }, { requireAuth: true, rateLimit: RateLimiters.standard })(request)
}

After: Explicit subscription ownership verification

// SECURE CODE
export async function DELETE(request, { params }) {
  const { id, tagId } = await params
  return createApiRoute(async (_req, context, user) => {
    if (!user) throw ApiErrors.unauthorized()

    const supabase = await createClient()

    // ✅ Verify subscription ownership
    const { data: subscription, error: subError } = await supabase
      .from("subscriptions")
      .select("user_id")
      .eq("id", id)
      .single()

    if (subError || !subscription) {
      throw ApiErrors.notFound("Subscription")
    }

    checkOwnership(user.id, subscription.user_id)

    await removeTagFromSubscription(id, tagId)
    return createSuccessResponse({ removed: true }, HttpStatus.OK, context.requestId)
  }, { requireAuth: true, rateLimit: RateLimiters.standard })(request)
}

Impact: Prevents cross-user data manipulation

Fix #3: Notes Update Explicit Ownership Check

File: client/app/api/subscriptions/[id]/notes/route.ts

Before: Relied on implicit database filtering in helper function

// WEAK CODE
export async function PATCH(request, { params }) {
  const { id } = await params
  return createApiRoute(async (_req, context, user) => {
    if (!user) throw new Error("User not authenticated")
    const { notes } = await validateRequestBody(request, notesSchema)
    await updateSubscriptionNotes(id, user.id, notes) // ⚠️ Implicit check
    return createSuccessResponse({ updated: true }, HttpStatus.OK, context.requestId)
  }, { requireAuth: true, rateLimit: RateLimiters.standard })(request)
}

After: Explicit ownership verification before update

// SECURE CODE
export async function PATCH(request, { params }) {
  const { id } = await params
  return createApiRoute(async (_req, context, user) => {
    if (!user) throw ApiErrors.unauthorized()
    const { notes } = await validateRequestBody(request, notesSchema)

    const supabase = await createClient()

    // ✅ Explicitly verify subscription ownership
    const { data: subscription, error: subError } = await supabase
      .from("subscriptions")
      .select("user_id")
      .eq("id", id)
      .single()

    if (subError || !subscription) {
      throw ApiErrors.notFound("Subscription")
    }

    checkOwnership(user.id, subscription.user_id)

    await updateSubscriptionNotes(id, user.id, notes)
    return createSuccessResponse({ updated: true }, HttpStatus.OK, context.requestId)
  }, { requireAuth: true, rateLimit: RateLimiters.standard })(request)
}

Impact: Prevents silent failures and ensures explicit security

Fix #4: Payment Refund Ownership Check

File: client/app/api/payments/refund/route.ts

Before: No ownership verification - users could refund ANY payment

// VULNERABLE CODE
export const POST = createApiRoute(
  async (request: NextRequest, context, user) => {
    if (!user) {
      throw ApiErrors.unauthorized("User not authenticated")
    }
    const body = await validateRequestBody(request, refundSchema)

    const paymentService = new PaymentService({ provider: "stripe" })
    const result = await paymentService.refundPayment(body.transactionId) // ❌ No ownership check

    if (!result.success) {
      throw ApiErrors.internalError(`Refund failed: ${result.error || "Unknown error"}`)
    }
    return createSuccessResponse({ refundId: result.transactionId, status: "refunded" }, HttpStatus.OK, context.requestId)
  },
  { requireAuth: true, rateLimit: RateLimiters.strict }
)

After: Explicit payment ownership verification and duplicate refund prevention

// SECURE CODE
export const POST = createApiRoute(
  async (request: NextRequest, context, user) => {
    if (!user) {
      throw ApiErrors.unauthorized("User not authenticated")
    }
    const body = await validateRequestBody(request, refundSchema)

    const supabase = await createClient()

    // ✅ Verify payment ownership before refunding
    const { data: payment, error: paymentError } = await supabase
      .from("payments")
      .select("user_id, status")
      .eq("transaction_id", body.transactionId)
      .single()

    if (paymentError || !payment) {
      throw ApiErrors.notFound("Payment")
    }

    // ✅ Verify the payment belongs to the requesting user
    checkOwnership(user.id, payment.user_id)

    // ✅ Check if payment is already refunded
    if (payment.status === "refunded") {
      throw ApiErrors.badRequest("Payment has already been refunded")
    }

    const paymentService = new PaymentService({ provider: "stripe" })
    const result = await paymentService.refundPayment(body.transactionId)

    if (!result.success) {
      throw ApiErrors.internalError(`Refund failed: ${result.error || "Unknown error"}`)
    }
    return createSuccessResponse({ refundId: result.transactionId, status: "refunded" }, HttpStatus.OK, context.requestId)
  },
  { requireAuth: true, rateLimit: RateLimiters.strict }
)

Impact: Prevents financial fraud and duplicate refunds

3. High Priority Fix: CSV Import Rate Limiting ✅

File: client/app/api/subscriptions/import/route.ts

Before: No rate limiting on bulk import endpoint

export async function POST(request: NextRequest) {
  try {
    const supabase = await createClient()
    const { data: { user } } = await supabase.auth.getUser()
    if (!user) return NextResponse.json({ success: false, error: "Unauthorized" }, { status: 401 })
    // ... rest of import logic
  } catch (err) {
    // ...
  }
}

After: Strict rate limiting applied

export async function POST(request: NextRequest) {
  try {
    // ✅ Apply strict rate limiting for bulk imports (5 imports per hour)
    RateLimiters.strict(request)

    const supabase = await createClient()
    const { data: { user } } = await supabase.auth.getUser()
    if (!user) return NextResponse.json({ success: false, error: "Unauthorized" }, { status: 401 })
    // ... rest of import logic
  } catch (err) {
    // ...
  }
}

Impact: Prevents DoS attacks via bulk import spam

Testing Instructions

Run Security Tests

cd client
npm test -- __tests__/api/security.test.ts

Manual Testing

  1. Test Cross-User Access:

    # Create subscription as User A
    curl -X POST /api/subscriptions \
      -H "Authorization: Bearer $USER_A_TOKEN" \
      -d '{"name":"Test","category":"Test","price":9.99}'

    # Try to delete as User B (should fail with 403)
    curl -X DELETE /api/subscriptions/$SUB_ID \
      -H "Authorization: Bearer $USER_B_TOKEN"
  2. Test Tag Assignment Security:

    # Try to assign User B's tag to User A's subscription (should fail)
    curl -X POST /api/subscriptions/$USER_A_SUB_ID/tags \
      -H "Authorization: Bearer $USER_A_TOKEN" \
      -d '{"tag_id":"$USER_B_TAG_ID"}'
  3. Test Payment Refund Security:

    # Try to refund User A's payment as User B (should fail)
    curl -X POST /api/payments/refund \
      -H "Authorization: Bearer $USER_B_TOKEN" \
      -d '{"transactionId":"$USER_A_PAYMENT_ID"}'
  4. Test Rate Limiting:

    # Spam CSV imports (should get rate limited)
    for i in {1..10}; do
      curl -X POST /api/subscriptions/import?commit=true \
        -H "Authorization: Bearer $TOKEN" \
        -F "file=@test.csv"
    done

Security Patterns Established

Pattern 1: Explicit Ownership Verification

// Always verify ownership before operations
const { data: resource, error } = await supabase
  .from("table")
  .select("user_id")
  .eq("id", resourceId)
  .single()

if (error || !resource) {
  throw ApiErrors.notFound("Resource")
}

checkOwnership(user.id, resource.user_id)

Pattern 2: Consistent Error Handling

// Use ApiErrors for consistent responses
if (!user) throw ApiErrors.unauthorized()
if (!resource) throw ApiErrors.notFound("Resource")
if (user.id !== resource.user_id) throw ApiErrors.forbidden()

Pattern 3: Rate Limiting for Sensitive Operations

export const POST = createApiRoute(
  async (request, context, user) => {
    // Handler logic
  },
  {
    requireAuth: true,
    rateLimit: RateLimiters.strict, // or .standard
  }
)

Maintenance Guidelines

For New Routes

  1. ✅ Use createApiRoute with requireAuth: true
  2. ✅ Explicitly verify ownership for resource operations
  3. ✅ Add appropriate rate limiting
  4. ✅ Use ApiErrors for consistent error responses
  5. ✅ Write security tests before merging
  6. ✅ Update SECURITY_AUDIT_MATRIX.md

For Existing Routes

  1. ✅ Review security matrix before modifications
  2. ✅ Never remove ownership checks without security review
  3. ✅ Test cross-user access after auth changes
  4. ✅ Update documentation when adding routes
