Services crashing on shut down with Python 3.8.20, Windows & Miniforge

The ExoSpec lab is running Python 3.8.20 and all packages installed via miniforge on Windows 10/11.

In this environment, shutting down services causes Python processes to crash with pop up message "Python has stopped working" in the ~ mid June version of develop.

This message hangs until the user clicks "close".

I've traced this issue down to the CleanupAttributes() call in catkit_core/Service.cpp

To be clear: this does not mean that the issue is with the cleanup methods themselves. The problem is with the system that is managing the resources that are attempted to be cleaned up. It means that some other part is messing up, not the cleanup itself. Removing the cleanup calls means that the process would just not give an error, but the bug is still there. In addition, you're now leaking memory that would've been cleaned up by the cleanup call.

FYI: while the Python process crashes, the service has already fully closed at that point. So hardware safety is fine, unless you rely on exit handlers yourself for resource management, which you _shouldn't.

I'll look into this and try to reproduce with miniforge (which I haven't done before).

Thanks for taking a look. Yes, I don't think that commenting out the cleanup is necessarily the right solution, but I think it could help us narrow down which order of operations might not be agreeing.

I'm thinking because it hangs when shutting down that this will break our unit tests or cleanup of unit tests in our GitLab runner for the ExoSpec repo.

If trying to recreate with miniforge, it still may link to your existing conda channels as there are many sneaky place like .condarc for these references to be left around. Make sure to remove any reference to the anaconda 'defaults' channel and only use 'conda-forge'.

To be clear: this does not mean that the issue is with the cleanup methods themselves. The problem is with the system that is managing the resources that are attempted to be cleaned up. It means that some other part is messing up, not the cleanup itself. Removing the cleanup calls means that the process would just not give an error, but the bug is still there. In addition, you're now leaking memory that would've been cleaned up by the cleanup call.

FYI: while the Python process crashes, the service has already fully closed at that point. So hardware safety is fine, unless you rely on exit handlers yourself for resource management, which you _shouldn't.

I'll look into this and try to reproduce with miniforge (which I haven't done before).

I am wondering if we really need to clear these std::map lists. Isn't the point of std::map and std::shared_ptr that they manage their own memory. I think they will handle destruction on their own in the event we don't provide a way to clean them up.
