I maintain 100+ repositories. Many of these are file-sharing tools like croc (>40k stars) or Go-based libraries like progressbar (~4k stars) and peerdiscovery (~600 stars). I have written and rewritten dozens of free musical programs for the norns sound computer, like oooooo, mx.samples, mx.synths, and o-o-o.
These tools require constant support, like assistance with PRs and Issues nearly every day.
Most costly is the server bandwidth - the free croc file transfer tool uses 40 terabytes of bandwidth every month. I pay for this bandwidth, and its not cheap. It costs me about $200/month in server costs. The croc tool has been online for almost 10 years, without interruption, because of donations.
My goal is that 1% of people donate $1 which would make my server costs sustainable.
I just need 200 people to donate $1/month for my server costs to be sustainable for the free open-source tools I provide.
