Path out of Experimental?

Hey all! I'm really interested in seeing gRPC support added to mainline SpringBoot releases.

I currently work on a commercial project that uses the grpc-spring-boot-starter project from LogNet, but it still depends on SpringBoot 3.1.1 and is preventing us from upgrading to a newer release.

Can you shine some light on the path that this project will have to take to get out of the Experimental state? I'm not looking for hard dates, but more of a general idea of when we can expect this project to be ready for production use.

@MusikPolice if you want an intermediate step until this project comes online, https://github.com/grpc-ecosystem/grpc-spring works with recent Spring versions

We're just waiting for people to use it - pretty much feature complete at this point but we don't want to jump the gun. If you try it and it works that's a useful data point.

Well, I can confirm release 0.5.0 works well for us, so I'd love to see this path out of experimental happen soon :).

There's going to be a 0.6.0 with some name changes for the automatic stub/client creation (to match what is coming in Spring Framework better). Try a snapshot if you are using @GrpcClient (now @ImportGrpcClients).

@dsyer whats that timeline past 0.6.0? My company would similarly like a non experimental release to pickup and wanted our internal release cadence to match up with this projects planned release. We have verified this in a few test projects but would prefer a non experimental release before going live in prod.

Probably straight to 1.0.0 as soon as possible. We have some internal processes to clear the project out of "experimental". If you want to speed things up vote for this issue by adding an emoji to the original post.

Same answer as above. There is a process. It is underway. I will update here if anything changes. If you have any channels into Tanzu or Broadcom other than this tracker I'd encourage you to use them (just mention it to whoever you know inside Broadcom so people know it is important).

The decision has been taken to move out of experimental. The plan for now is to release 0.9.0 immediately (as soon as the project migrates), with support (including commercial) only until the next release. Then we aim for the autoconfiguration and starter jars to move to Spring Boot for 4.0.0, while the core gRPC features would be released as 1.0.0 (currently expected November 2025), and at that time the usual long term OSS and commercial support timelines would kick in.
