Using Amber Electric Home Assistant import and export rates and forecast #2822

I have the following entities available in Home assistant from Amber Electric, how can these be integrated into predbat? I's really like to be using the forecast, for example. Even if I can patch them so that they appear like the already working Octopus integration maybe?

Ok, ive tried using override automation to go from my existing sensor into predbat

This is seen in the Manual API Controls

Can you explain more about how your energy supplier prices work. Is it a base price that then varies in particular events, or is it a price that continually varies.

You can use rate override but predbat really expects to get a base price to work from, this can be varying, doesn't have to be fixed across the day.

There are several ways to define the base price https://springfall2008.github.io/batpred/energy-rates/

If yours is a varying price across the day then you probably need a template sensor and configure metric_octopus_import (or _export) to point to that sensor https://springfall2008.github.io/batpred/energy-rates/#other-energy-spot-rate-sensor-integrations

Predbat does all of its planning based on 30 minute time segments so your rate_export_override (and your base rate sensor) should be aligned to start/end at :00 and :30 minutes past each hour. As yours are :35 minutes that's probably why they are being ignored

@gcoan essentially my supplier Amber Electric gives a forecast similar in style to Octopus, I think based on a 5min window.
its a JSON, I think.
I was trying to get any export or import value into predbat via the manual API as a proof of concept. I'd love to be able to use this sensor directly in predbat as its part of Amber Electric home assistant automation information.

Ok that's good.

It's unlikely predbat would be enhanced to take in your specific sensor as that would be a never ending development job. Instead you'll have to write the template code to transform it to one of the formats already supported.

And as I said predbat currently only accepts rates at 30 minute granularity so you'll have to average the 5 minute spot prices.

As a proof of concept if you write a template sensor to create static data in the right format then that would be the first step to then writing something that reads your integration rates output

Well, I think I've resolved an automation using MQTT broker to fake an octopus account
For anyone else daft enough to go on this journey.
Health warning, this is not yet perfected and I'm pretty sure my events are not firing properly.
I'd appreciate an octopus event sensor summary, and sensor summary from anyone using them @gcoan the pic was very useful, a txt file would be perfect.

this is impressive @RangeyRover I wasn't expecting you to fake up an entire Octopus event structure using MQTT, its a bit complicated because of the way the Octopus integration works and predbat reads from the sensor name in apps.yaml to find the current and previous events.

I was expecting you would just create a single template sensor with the raw_today and raw_tomorrow attributes and configure apps.yaml to point to that sensor

Yes I agree, this part of the documentation could do with being expanded a bit further, we've not had many people write their own rate configurations so it's not been touched much.

You can get the schema from reading the CZ example, but agree, it should be more explicitly documented.

Are you happy enough with your example for it to be added to the docs?

Amber Electric- Octopus Import
Octopus Import Today.yaml
It needs Mosquitto Broker installed to address the Octopus events and sensor.
It needs Amber Electric Home assistant to be installed, it's using their forecast sensors.
It needs metric_octopus_import: activating in apps.yaml

Install process:
Install Mosquitto Broker
Install Amber Electric Home assistant
Octopus_Export_Today_With_past_data.yml
Octopus_Import_Today_With_past_data.yml
Install the 2 above as 5min automations which publish to the broker
Then configure Predbat to use Octopus Pricing which should now be Amber based pricing, which it should pick up from the Mosquitto Broker

Ive stopped using Predbat as it was too heavy for my HA machine with 5 min cadence it would not finish a prediction cycle before the next one, and with Amber you need 5 min cycle, so I made my own Linear Problem based solution.
I wont link it here as I think thats not right, but you could find it and others if you searched around.

Interestingly Amber's VPP is coming to the UK in the form of E-on Next's Solar Max (pilot) tariff. It looks somewhat like a hybrid of Intelligent Flux and Agile. It would normally control the inverter, but you can override it whenever you like (so either run predbat in read-only mode, or perhaps let predbat take control at times). Perhaps could also be another source of wholesale prices even if you are not on the tariff. So I wonder if we'll get a somewhat similar data source to work from. I'd guess half hourly rather than every 5 minutes, and from what I understand from the Solar Max Ts&Cs, the prices can continually evolve through the day, until the actual start of the half-hour slot. https://www.eonnext.com/tariffs/next-solar-max

Hi Rangey

I hope you can save/help me from this mess. Ive been on a endless loop of failures and troubleshooting thanks to AI recommending me BatPred for my Fox system with Amber which im not sure is even possible at this point.

Are you still using BatPred and is it going ok? Can you help me with what i need to do to get it up and running? Ive tried so many different variables and once I get a success it breaks something else.

The first is my battery SOC- for some reason I can get my battery SOC value in the apps page for the value "SoC" no matter what I've tried it just doesn't want to budge- Image for context ( top left and on Dash screen SoC is 0%. Even though in "Apps" it does have my "battery_soc" and it is accurate at 37%.

answering your first question, there is a documented working example of FoxESS inverter with predbat in the predbat inverter setup instructions now alongwith a template apps.yaml https://springfall2008.github.io/batpred/inverter-setup/#fox

I suggest you start from there, it should get you to a working inverter control faster

If you are using rates_import and export https://springfall2008.github.io/batpred/energy-rates/#rate-bands-to-manually-configure-energy-rates then predbat is expecting a start time, end time and a rate. You are only supplying the current rate so predbat assumes that applies 24 x 7.

The conversation and example earlier is about how to get the Amber electric rates into the right format for predbat, you could copy that or generate a template sensor as per the enerty spot rate example https://springfall2008.github.io/batpred/energy-rates/#other-energy-spot-rate-sensor-integrations

Personally it got too finicky and I had to pivot. I ended up setting up automations using Emhass and it worked much better.

Ive since moved on from that and Amber due to my usage changing and requiring a different approach.
