🚀 Next Steps: Create GitHub Repository

Step 1: Create Repository on GitHub

  1. Go to GitHub: https://github.com/new

  2. Fill in details:

    • Repository name: prometheus-dump-operator

    • Description: Convert Prometheus TSDB to SAR format - Enable kernel engineers to analyze Prometheus metrics using familiar Unix tools

    • Visibility: ✅ Public (recommended for open source)

    • Initialize repository:

      • ❌ Do NOT add README
      • ❌ Do NOT add .gitignore
      • ❌ Do NOT choose a license

      (We already have all these files!)

  3. Click: "Create repository"


Step 2: Configure Git User (If Needed)

The commit was created with auto-detected credentials. You may want to set your proper name and email:

# Set your name and email
git config --global user.name "Your Name"
git config --global user.email "your.email@example.com"

# Update the commit author (optional)
git commit --amend --reset-author --no-edit

Step 3: Add GitHub Remote

Once you've created the repository on GitHub, add it as remote:

# Replace YOUR-USERNAME with your actual GitHub username
git remote add origin https://github.com/YOUR-USERNAME/prometheus-dump-operator.git

# Verify remote was added
git remote -v

Expected output:

origin  https://github.com/YOUR-USERNAME/prometheus-dump-operator.git (fetch)

Step 4: Push to GitHub

# Push the main branch
git push -u origin main

You should see output like:

🔧 Configure Repository Settings

After pushing, configure your repository:

1. Add Topics/Tags

Settings > General > Topics

Add these tags:

prometheus, sar, monitoring, kubernetes, openshift, golang, 
sysadmin, system-administration, metrics, observability

2. Enable Features

Settings > General > Features

  • ✅ Issues
  • ✅ Discussions (recommended)
  • ❌ Wiki (we use Markdown docs)

3. Set Up Branch Protection

Settings > Branches > Add rule

  • Branch name: main
  • ✅ Require pull request reviews
  • ✅ Require status checks to pass
  • ✅ Require linear history

4. Configure Social Preview

Settings > General > Social preview

  • Upload a 1280x640px image with project name
  • Or use GitHub's auto-generated preview

📦 Create First Release

After pushing, create your first release:

# Build binaries
./build.sh

# Create tag
git tag -a v1.0.0 -m "First stable release

- Standalone CLI binary (prom2sar)
- Kubernetes Operator
- Complete SAR format support
- Comprehensive documentation
- CI/CD workflows
- Production ready"

# Push tag
git push origin v1.0.0

GitHub Actions will automatically:

  • Build binaries for multiple platforms
  • Create GitHub release
  • Upload release artifacts

📝 Post-Push Checklist

After pushing to GitHub:

  • Repository is visible at github.com/YOUR-USERNAME/prometheus-dump-operator
  • All 43 files are present
  • README displays correctly
  • Topics/tags added
  • Branch protection enabled
  • Discussions enabled (optional)
  • First release created
  • GitHub Actions workflows visible in Actions tab

🆘 Troubleshooting

Issue: "remote: Repository not found"

Solution:

  • Verify repository exists on GitHub
  • Check URL: git remote -v
  • Update if needed: git remote set-url origin https://github.com/YOUR-USERNAME/prometheus-dump-operator.git

Issue: "failed to push some refs"

Solution:

  • Make sure repository is empty (no README/license added during creation)
  • Force push if needed: git push -u origin main --force (only for initial push!)

Issue: Authentication failed

Solution:

  • Use Personal Access Token instead of password
  • Create token: GitHub Settings > Developer settings > Personal access tokens
  • Use token as password when prompted
