Text on Stacker News is static. Once it is posted by the author, it doesn't change and there is no way for the community to contribute to the content. What if Stacker News let people use sats to highlight interesting content for all to see?
Describe the solution you'd like
I see Highlighter working in the following way:
When someone highlights text on Stacker News and then zaps the item, their selected text will be highlighted in green for the world to see. Any stacker can highlight a snippet in a post or comment, zap the relevant item, and emphasize the ideas that resonate most with them.
Amazon has a similar feature for their Kindle devices, where they display the most highlighted snippets of text in a book (collected from all the readers of that book) with a dotted underline to emphasize their importance.
Medium has a similar feature where they highlight in green the "top highlight" of a particular article from all the readers of that article in their community. An example of Medium's highlighting feature is below.
Stacker News could take these ideas even further by requiring a zap payment to highlight the text on a post or comment.
For example, if I highlight a text snippet and zap that post with 100 sats, the highlighted text turns green for all to see. If another stacker then zaps a different snippet with 200 sats, their highlighted text replaces mine. However, if yet another stacker highlights the same text snippet as me with 300 more sats, my initially highlighted text once again becomes highlighted for all to see.
At any given time, only one sentence or paragraph on a post or comment will be highlighted for all to see. On mouse hover of the highlighted text, stackers will be able to see a tooltip that reads something like "X stackers highlighted this sentence with Y sats".
This feature will help Stacker News in the following ways:
Stackers will be able to skim through long posts quicker and identify interesting segments
The SN community will get a new tool to express value and acknowledge someone's effort without needing to comment
Stackers will earn in new ways for their content, fuelled by the highlighted text snippet competition (Since only the most highlighted sentence or paragraph will be visible)
All of this can be achieved without taking up any additional space on the screen or adding new UI/UX components
This idea could also be extended to allow stackers to express negative feedback on a post or comment. For example, if I highlight a text snippet and downzap it, the highlighted text may appear red instead of green.
