Releases: status-im/status-app
2.36.0
Status v2.36: Private Browser, Secure Message Sync & Emoji Reactions and moreβ¦
Every time you switch from chat to browserβ¦
every time you move from wallet to dAppβ¦
every time you jump between appsβ¦
your metadata leaks and your privacy disappears.
Status was created to push back against that design.
Because real privacy isnβt just encrypted messages. Real privacy means your entire digital flow stays inside one secure environment: your conversations, your browsing, your wallet, your dApps, your identity.
All private. All in one place. All yours.
Thatβs the mission: to build the first truly Privacy Super App.
And Status Desktop v2.36 is our next major step toward that goal (Mobile release is coming soon, once it passes the Apple App Store and Google Play Store reviews).
Hereβs whatβs new in Status v2.36
A Built-in Private Browser
Status Desktop now includes a built-in private browser so you can stay inside the private Status environment from: chat β link β dApp β transaction
Hereβs what you get:
- Switch instantly between Incognito and Standard modes
- Search through various private and general search engines (or add your own)
- Your crypto wallet + dApp connector are integrated with the browser so you can interact with dApps directly from the browser
- Every link you tap now opens inside the Status browser, helping you avoid exposing your data to external browsers
This transforms Status into the first truly Privacy Super App where your chat, wallet, browser, and dApps are all connected and accessed within a single app. Until now, tapping a link pushed you into Chrome or Safari leaking your data and breaking your privacy.
With v2.36:
- You never leave Status when opening links
- Everything opens in the new in-app browser
- Now you can choose a privacy engine or turn it off completely, so now every link opens on your terms
- You can chat, transact, and browse privately in one place
No more app-hopping. No more exposure.
Where do you start? The browser opens to the Status Network hub by default. Just switch to Testnet Mode via: Settings β Wallet β Networks β Enable Testnet Mode to connect to the hub.
And if you want maximum privacy when connecting to or interacting with dApps, you can switch the browser into full Incognito mode and enjoy your dApp interactions in a private mode.
πͺπΈ Spanish Translation
Status ahora tambiΓ©n estΓ‘ en espaΓ±ol.
Status is now in Spanish, too.
As Status grows globally, so does the need for accessibility.
Weβve added a neutral, LatAm-leaning Spanish translation, so whether you're in Mexico, Argentina, Spain, or anywhere across the Spanish-speaking world, the app feels natural to use.
More languages are on the way.
Full Transaction History (All Accounts Supported)
If you manage multiple Ethereum accounts and wallets, you know how messy transaction history can get. v2.36 cleans that up. You can now see the full history of your incoming and outgoing transactions including wallets you've added or imported.
Even better: In the All Accounts view, you can see activity across all your wallets in one place. A small improvement, but one that makes every degenβs life easier.
Improved Features
One of the biggest frustrations in crypto decentralized messaging is switching devices means losing your past messages. v2.36 finally solves that in a privacy-first way.
Two major upgrades make this possible:
1. A redesigned On-Device Backup
The new On-Device Backup includes:
- A cleaner UI
- Automatic backups every 30 minutes
- Backups encrypted and stored only on your device
- Optional backup for:
- direct messages
- group chats
- community messages
This runs fully locally, on your device. You stay in control.
2. Syncing your Past Messages (Opt-In)
Setting up Status on a new device now feels easier. You can restore your past messages on a new device over our local and encrypted syncing feature if you choose to. Your conversations stay yours, and they travel with you.
Privacy Shouldnβt Feel Boring
The number 1 most-requested feature on our feature board
And todayβ¦
Emoji Reactions are here, and they look insanely good! You can now react to any message with our entire emoji collection.
Yes, everything. From subtle βπβ to chaotic βπ€ͺπ€£πβ energy, itβs all yours. Just remember: Try not to go too wild, as thereβs a 20-emoji limit per message (for now π€)
And the best part: itβs FAST
Your 5 most recently used emojis are always pinned at the top, so the ones you actually use are always one tap away.
- On Desktop, just hover over a message and the reaction bar pops up
- Or right-click if thatβs your muscle memory
Itβs quick, itβs fun, it feels amazing, and it changes how conversations flow inside Status.
A Cleaner, More Comfortable Status
Alongside the big features, v2.36 includes UI improvements you'll notice instantly:
- A Notification Centre now lives in the main navigation bar
- A new Layout Spacing option lets you choose a compact or more spacious feel
All designed to make Status feel more natural and comfortable every day.
And honestly - it all just feels fresh.
The app runs better, looks better, and responds better. Open it, tap around, switch layouts, check the notification centreβ¦Youβll feel the difference immediately. Itβs the kind of update that makes you want to explore the app again!

2.35.0
Status Desktop v2.35: Local Backups, New Home Page, Performance Boosts, and More
β Important Notes for This Release
Mandatory Upgrade for v2.32 and Below β οΈ
This release is a required upgrade for all users on Status v2.32 and below. It introduces a breaking change: single content topic for communities. New Apps (v2.33 and above) no longer listen to all deprecated content topics for communities; they listen to a single content topic only. As a result, messages sent by older Apps (v2.32 and below) on deprecated topics will not be received by the new Apps (v2.33 and above). (π More info: #5864)
Release Highlights
- On-device (local) user data backups with Status profile restore for fast, private recovery.
- New Home Page quick search with personalised pinning for faster access across the app.
- Performance boosts (up to ~400 MB less RAM), stability improvements, and key bug fixes.
Local User Data Backups & Status Profile Restore
This release adds automatic and manual local backups for your user data and lets you restore one or more Status profiles from local backup files.
Backups are fast, reliable, and private β your data stays only on your device and never leaves it.
How local user data backup works
Automatic (default, every 30 minutes)
After you update to Status v2.35, the app will automatically back up your data every 30 minutes.
Backup data includes:
- Chat contacts
- Chat list but not the messages (backup for messages is in development)
- App settings
- Profile data
- Wallet watch accounts
Manual
Need to back up right now?
Go to Settings β Syncing and click βBack Up Data Locallyβ to create/update a local backup file without waiting for the next automatic cycle.
All backups are stored locally on your device only. No one, including Status, can see or access them.
How to Restore Your Local Backup Files
If you need to restore your Status profiles in your current app installation or after a fresh app installation, you can do so using your local backup files.
Note: Backups are created per Status profile. Each file name includes a portion of that profileβs chat key, so you can easily tell backup files for different profiles apart.
If you can still log in to your profile
- Go to Settings β Syncing.
- Click βImport Local Backup Fileβ.
- In the backup folder, select the file for your current profile (look for the chat-key snippet in the name).
- Your profile data will be restored.
If you cannot log in to your profile
- Open your local backup folder (default paths below):
- Windows: C:\Users%USER%\AppData\Roaming\Status\backups
- MacOS: ~/Library/Application Support/Status/backups
- Linux: $HOME/.config/Status/backups
- Copy your backup files to a safe location outside the Status app data folders.
- Uninstall the Status app.
- Install the latest version from https://status.app/.
- During onboarding, on the βWelcome backβ screen, open the user menu and select βLog inβ.
- Choose whether to share usage data (optional).
- On the βLog inβ screen, select βEnter recovery phraseβ.
- Enter your recovery phrase.
- Create a profile password when prompted.
- On βImport Local Backupβ, either:
- Click βImport from fileβ¦β and select your backup file, or
- Skip for now and later go to Settings β Syncing β Import Local Backup File.
After these steps, your Status profile data should be restored. If you have multiple profiles, repeat steps #5 to #10 above for each profile.
Whatβs Next
Upcoming iterations will extend local backups to include chat messages and add opt-in/opt-out controls, so you can choose whether to back up your chats.

Weβd love your feedback and feature requests at Status Discuss β Desktop Features.
Home Page with quick search and personalised pinning
In Status v2.35, users can quickly search through the sections of the Status app and pin those to which they want quick access to their Home tab taskbar.
Manual Unpairing for Synced Devices
You can now choose which devices stay paired.
Go to Settings β Syncing to unpair a lost, replaced, or uninstalled device so only your trusted devices remain connected.
