Replace Minio with another S3 service

Since the 13 february, the minio/minio repository has been archived and in parallel, the minio docker image won't receive any further updates.

The latest version of minio docker image still having unfixed CVE and vulnerability issues, I highly recommand to migrate all the self-hosted configuration to a more FOSS-friendly software. Here are some potential examples:

Since the backend of Stoat is written in Rust and also uses AGPL (if I read that LICENSE file right), a good pick would be GarageHQ, since it features a similiar license, is also written in Rust, and would thus offer the highest level of immediate integration with the rest of the microservices. Garage offers, to my knowledge anyway, Rust libraries to interact with their stuff - although they are S3 compatible too so...that probably does not matter too much.

As of today RustFS is still not considered production ready. Garage is stable and in the next release (2.3.x) there will be a --single-node flag for easy single node setups. In the mean time you can use the garage-single-node OCI image from my GitHub project: https://github.com/bikeshedder/garage-single-node

I just came here after checking out Stout and found minio listed as a service in the compose.yml.

Try versity gateway - it is the simplest implementation and transparent to the filesystem. S3 shouldn't be needed unless you are doing hyperscale stuff

There's also a fork that should at least get security updates, as someone stepped up to build containers: https://blog.vonng.com/en/db/minio-resurrect/, which could be used in the short term

Another great alternative is SeaweedFS. I recently gave it a try and the single node deployment works like a charm. I consider it a true drop-in replacement for Minio.

I've recently deployed SeadweedFS for an application that serves 3.1M images with an average file size of 160kb. It does store everything in ~1000 files on disk and works in an append-only fashion. This makes snapshots, backups and recovery a breeze. While Minio takes a couple of seconds to give me a file listing I get a response from SeaweedFS almost instantly.

For storing images and small files I'd pick SeaweedFS over Minio any time. Garage is still a great candidate but it's definitely not a drop-in replacement due to a much more limited support of the S3 protocol (and some minor quirks).

Our system is built around S3, and is thus a requirement.
