I want the corresponding icon to appear automatically when the power adapter or Wi-Fi connection is disconnected.

That sounds like a good first step towards this feature. What I'd love to see is scripts running at a defined interval to toggle menu bar item visibility:

• Docker: show if container running / update available
• Tunnelblick: show if connected
• Wireguard: show if connected
• Tailscale: show if connected
• etc.

I came here to look for this exact feature. This feature is what kept me with Bartender although it's very unstable. It keeps my status bar clean, dynamic and relevant.
I like to have triggers such as:

1. When battery is below 20% > show battery
2. If Wifi is disconnected > show wifi icon
3. If external monitor is connected > show full status bar
4. If bluetooth is on > show icon
5. When google drive is syncing > show icon
   etc
