For some reason, Thaw is randomly closing all the applications I had in the hidden section and reopening them. It only affects the applications I explicitly put into the hidden section.

I can confirm. I think this happens when a monitor is connected to the Mac or it wakes from sleep.

I did! Applying new spacing settings also restarts the applications.

I didn't set any spacing but it changes the behavior/spacing of menu items anyways.
I've set the spacing via the terminal a very long time ago.
The only thing I changed in the Displays section is, that I enabled the Thaw Bar on my built-in display

I see. The spacing settings are global. So when you attach a new display that has different spacing the settings will be applied. For the settings to work these apps need to be restarted.

We might need to update the wording and maybe make the Spacing settings opt-in.

But when you have set different spacing per display then apps need to restart. Sadly no other way around. But as said we might need to rework this a bit.

These are the same settings. Thaw changes the settings you set in the terminal.

Wouldn’t it make sense to first check whether these values were manually configured? There is also no apparent way to change the defaults that would be applied globally from within Thaw.
For example, my current settings are:

NSStatusItemSpacing=6
NSStatusItemSelectionPadding=3

I’d prefer to avoid having all menu bar apps restart repeatedly just because these values are being reapplied.

Yes. I have custom spacing enabled. This is to solve a related issue where icons that end up in the Notch flickers into closing (e.g. JetBrains Toolbox, Amphetamine)
