A future traffic sign overlay is a possibility, but IIRC this requires a really comprehensive tagging scheme for all the traffic signs, plus presets for that.

so it would require work on side https://github.com/openstreetmap/id-tagging-schema - for start identifying what is missing, proposing it to be added there

TL;DR: IMHO speed cameras and traffic mirrors should be included in the Things overlay (at least for the time being when we don't have separate Traffic overlay). IMHO, that should be suggested as an issue.
(Some workarounds exists, but are not very easy to use or are problematic).

Interesting; as I would not classify speed cameras as "traffic signs". Sure, they are present near roads, and are useful for the drivers there, but so are (for example):

• milestones (which are IMHO much more traffic-sign-alike than speed cameras)
• aeroway=navigationaid for directing/controlling air traffic
• seamark:type=buoy_isolated_danger and similar waterway related tags
• (and even street lamps etc)

... and we can map all of those.

Perhaps speed cameras should be suggested for reconsideration too? (perhaps along with traffic mirrors) as they are not really street signs... Especially since we do not have separated traffic signs overlay (so we're throwing out the baby with the bathwater, all the while without really fixing consistency issue i.e. "nothing that is even slightly related to traffic navigation should be present in Things overlay, but only in future Traffic overlay")

Yeah, that seems like a huge amount work though. What is currently available:

• use Things overlay in StreetComplete to add "generic" surveillance camera, and others using other editors can then add extra details (e.g. surveillance:zone=traffic, surveillance:type=ALPR

  The disadvantage is that if alternate tagging is used (i.e. highway=speed_camera instead of surveillance:type=camera) , you won't see already mapped speed camera, so you might add duplicates (unless you know speed camera is not tagged, as you didn't see it in other app like OsmAnd).

• use SCEE (StreetComplete "Expert edition" fork) and:

  • create custom Overlay which will show all cameras (highway=speed_camera or man_made=surveillance ) to avoid adding duplicates, and then
  • long press and use Add POI (which will use iD presets and add highway=speed_camera if you prefer that tagging) or use regular things overlay as in StreetComplete (and hope for e.g. Add quest "What type of surveillance is this ?" Helium314/SCEE#929 and Add quest "What type of surveilled area is being monitored by this ?" Helium314/SCEE#926 to add details)

on one hand I agree, on the other it is minor and I do not want to annoy Tobias by relitigating it after clear decision was taken

Ok then... I do agree that westnordost is absolutely critical and irreplaceable here, and that he has a lot of work on his hands.

However, speed cameras seem¹ to be very important to many car users and are major issue in navigation apps (see e.g. 120+ speed camera related issues in OsmAnd, ongoing discussion in CoMaps telegram channel etc)
