Student Loses Project Twice

There were two times in the past four weeks one of the students lost their project completely.

There is nothing in the logs to really help determine the cause of the problem, but this is what I think happened right before both times the student lost their project.

1. Splashscreen gets stuck
2. Play and then Stop are pressed
3. Tab is refreshed

The result is that the project is gone, and that none of the projects in local storage remain.

It was quite a bummer as the student had a habit of waiting until their project was "complete" before saving to the planet. The student also did not save anything locally (as html).

The student was running from Rawgit version of Music Blocks. We were using Chromium (79.0.3...). OS is Trisquel.

Hey @walterbender I could see that as we are saving current projects in local storage if we store it in session storage we will not lose it after reload is this solution useful and can I work on it

We want saved projects to persist after the session ends. But there could be some temporary state where session storage is useful. Please spell out your plan before coding.

Hey @walterbender my basic idea to solve this issue will be I will be using sessionStorage in PlanetStorage.js for storing temporary changed in a project made by the user opening project and accordingly project will be rendered whether sessionStorage will be empty then a fresh my project opens but if sessionStorage has some data then that data will be rendered on screen

I don't quite understand your explanation.

Presumably you plan to use session storage and only write to local storage when the user saves? Not sure that will help in the case that the user loses their session.

Is writing to session storage more robust?

@walterbender I guess you are right then can u suggest what other solution could be used to resolve this problem sessionStorage once lost would create a problem

Hi @walterbender, is this still an issue, I was thinking of creating a backup system that maintains a separate backup copy of the project in the indexedDB every say x minutes, so if it cannot get the data from local storage, it will restore from backup.

Not sure how to reproduce this so I am not sure if we'd know the copy from local storage in unavailable. @pikurasa might have some insight.

@walterbender I could try and stimulate it by setting the local storage to null, and see if project is getting lost. @pikurasa what do you think, is this issue worth attempting? Bcos I saw issue #2749 and #2614 also which was similar to this

What usually happens before the project becomes inaccessible and unsave-able is that the user clicks on the Planet.

So, I doubt that setting the local storage to null will help simulate the cause of this issue.
