What is the problem you are trying to solve with this feature?

When registering, the system requires an email address instead of username.

What is the solution you are proposing?

1. Make the email address field optional during account registration.
2. Require a 'username' during account registration.
3. Use the username for account login.
4. Only use an email address for email based notifications.

What alternatives have you considered?

I see that SSO is a planned feature, but that should not require that all installations use an email address as the login name. For example, add a config flag to use SSO or not (HBOX_SSO: ). That way for those of us who never intend to use SSO we can have an easier login process.

Thanks for the suggestion, it's actually come up a few times, but we won't be switching to allow username only logins.

Not only is an email required for maintenance notifications you might configure, but additionally, when we implement password resets it will be required for that as well. There may also be additional features down the line that also require an email address.

You are not required to enter a real email address, just a email address.

How will password resets be handled when a fake email address is used and/or there is no mail server/relay setup?

If there is no email server/relay setup then there will be no password reset mechanism. There are local only mail catchers you could use for that kind of thing. It's not an uncommon way to do things with software, even self-hosted software.
