Updater plugin update.install() never returns

The updater plugins update.install() on js doesn't return anymore, execution is stuck inside the function. After closing the app and reopening it is still on the older version.
I tried enabling debug logging and with that the output shows "running on_before_exit hook" twice, but then nothing happens, the app stays open.

I haven't added anything to the on_before_exit.
I am on windows 10.
