what are "alfred" and "raycast"?

I know that I can google this, or click on the tags for these topics, but it wasn't until I got near the bottom of the readme that I realized that this tool is written for the context of "alfred" and/or "raycast". Can it be run standalone? If not, why are these contexts/restrictions not higher up in the readme?
