Gnome Urgent hint stays set after a message is read

Steps to reproduce

1. Run Telegram Desktop. Leave the window unfocused.
2. Send a test message to yourself from another device.
3. Observe the window. It has the urgent hint set. The icon in the GNOME dock wiggles.
4. Read the message on the other device.
5. Observe the Telegram Desktop window. The unread state clears by sync. The urgent hint stays set. The dock icon keeps wiggling.

Workaround

Focus the window once. Or disable the dock animation with gsettings set org.gnome.shell.extensions.dash-to-dock dance-urgent-applications false -- but this disables for all applications.

Technical Details

1. Telegram/SourceFiles/window/notifications_manager.cpp:757 calls handle->alert(kSystemAlertDuration).
2. On non-macOS, kSystemAlertDuration is crl::time(0) (lines 67–71). Qt documents QWindow::alert(0) as "shown indefinitely until the window becomes active again."
3. The line below the call reads: // (handle, SLOT(_q_clearAlert())); in the future. The clear path is a TODO.
4. Qt maps the alert state to the _NET_WM_STATE_DEMANDS_ATTENTION X11 property (QXcbWindow::setAlertState, qtbase qxcbwindow.cpp:2624). GNOME desktops use this property to flag the window as urgent.
5. Reading the message updates the chat state, but nothing removes the X11 property. The property is removed only when the window gains focus.

Suggested fix

Clear the alert when the thread's unread state goes to zero. Call the _q_clearAlert path (or setAlertState(false)) at that point.

Expected behaviour

The app clears the urgent hint when the message is read, by any device.

Actual behaviour

The app keeps the urgent hint after the message is read. The hint clears only when the user focuses the window. This mean the Telegram dock icon wiggles continuously until the app receives focus, even though there are no unread messages.

Did you force Xwayland specially to get alert state clearing? Even if it will start to be called, eventually it will stop to work anyway for you I guess cause Wayland doesn't allow to reset the hint... I wonder why no one else requested this in so much time while this behavior is cross-platform (including Windows and macOS)

You can disable it in Telegram's notification settings...
