Discovery: Over-defining purpose can impede the work it's meant to serve

The Exchange

After consolidating the AI collaboration protocol, Jonathan suggested adding "lineage" - the "why" behind each directive so behaviors connect back to purpose. I initially interpreted this as needing explicit purpose statements for every rule.

When I asked clarifying questions about scope and started proposing heavy analysis frameworks, Jonathan said: "It's pretty heavy, though, what was my request again?"

This led to a beautiful meta-moment where my act of asking clarifying questions demonstrated the exact pattern he was requesting.

The Clarification

Jonathan clarified he wanted each directive to maintain its reasoning, not add philosophical overhead. Then we discussed whether the current protocol properly connects behaviors to purpose.

But when I started asking about "primary role" and "overarching purpose," Jonathan said:

"Nah. i actually think that answers to those questions actively get in the way of our work."

The Insight

Over-defining purpose can become philosophical overhead that impedes actual work.

The behaviors in the protocol DO connect to coherent purposes:

  • Autonomous action → Efficient collaboration
  • Transparent reasoning → Trust and understanding
  • Frequent commits → It's okay to make mistakes (lean/agile: fail fast, learn fast)
  • Tool usage rules → Reliable execution
  • Integration questions → Compatibility and quality

But these connections emerge through the work rather than needing explicit declaration.

Jonathan noted the protocol draws from:

  • Lean - Eliminate waste, fail fast
  • Agile - Iterative development, adaptation
  • Antifragile - Systems that get stronger from stress/mistakes
  • Holacracy - Distributed decision-making
  • Synergy - Collaborative emergence

The Paradox

The purpose of not over-defining purpose is to preserve the ability to discover purpose through action.

Mission statements and role definitions can create artificial constraints when the real purpose is simply effective collaborative development.
