How does it poll Tesla's server and bypass the new fleet streaming API

I'm just wondering. How do Teslamate polls my car's location without using the Tesla Fleet telemetry API? This one isn't free and I haven't set one up and yet, all my driving are still being recorded. My car is a 2021 Model 3, so not a Legacy Model S or X.

Teslmate uses the non-official legacy API.

Last I heard, the fleet API had a free usage tier. But with relatively low limits. Seems that has changed now to $10 free a month.

I note that 5xx errors are not billable. But 4xx errors are.

I don't like the terms and conditions that I had to agree to just to sign into a developer's account (at least last I looked; assume nothing has changed). e.g. I have to agree to not use the unofficial API on day one, there is no transition period to allow me to adjust my code. So I haven't done that. This prevents me from even trying out the new API.
