The 2+3 KQK method is possible because the eye glow routines check palette RAM to know when it's done incrementing the color value. Hurting Kraid during the eye glow causes a white flash, which tricks the eye glow check into finishing early and triggering a full mouth open immediately. Without the hurt flash, the eye glow sequence must be waited out, preventing the faster 2+3 method.
