How to implement dynamic website directory mounting in Axum?

Summary

Hello, I'm new to both Rust and Axum, and would appreciate some guidance.

Goal:
Implement a system where:

1. Arbitrary local directories can be mounted as web-accessible sites
2. All sites are served under a common prefix (e.g. site/{site_name})
3. Mounts can be added/removed during runtime

Example Workflow:

1. Mount /home/user/docs → Accessible at site/docs_site
2. Mount /var/www/project → Accessible at site/project_site
3. Later unmount site/project_site when no longer needed

Key Questions:

1. How to safely serve files from dynamic paths?
2. Best practices for runtime route management?
3. Recommended crates/patterns for this use case?

Are there any examples or crates that demonstrate similar functionality? Any examples or architectural advice would be very helpful!

You can use SeeveDir for serving files.

As for dynamically changing what is being served, I don't think we have anything to do that easily. If that makes sense to you, you can create a struct that implements Service that you can control from outside and then pass that to axum::serve and mutate it later. You might want to see axum::serve and IntoMakeService, but know that this will be a bit advanced.
