Newline added at each launch

everytime i launch tomboy, it add an empty newline at the end of notes

Wow, I have not seen that. No, in one of the very early, experimental versions there was something similar, a newline added when a note (not tomboy-ng itself) was closed and then reopened.

Can you please tell me what version of tomboy-ng you are using and what platform you are running on ?

OK, I don't have a post release trixie here, will have t build one. But i was tested on the testing version of trixie. But maybe I did not notice ? I cannot see how trixie would be any different (in this respect) than bookworm I use and I see no sign of it.

I will build a new trixie. Just to be sure, you see these extra new-lines after closing and opening tomboy-ng or closing and opening a note ? Latter seem more likely...

Hello,
I can close the notes and open it without issues (no empty lines inserted at the end of the notes)
empty lines only appear when i logout/login or stop computer and restart it.
The issue is in the Save Procedure
If i create a note with text L2 on line 2 and L3 on line 3
So it looks like :

I do not add carriage return at the end of L3
my save file contains :

but is should be

And if i add a carriage return after L3, the saved file looks like :

Hmm, nope, I cannot reproduce that problem (I suspect github markup is hiding what you are trying to show me in your last message, they all look the same to me).

I have tried closing a note manually, before and after the auto save cuts in, then rebooting. And rebooting the VM before notes are autosaved and after.

Can you please test for me -

1. Does closing the tomboy-ng app trigger the problem or is it only when you log out or reboot ?
2. If not above, does closing tomboy-ng, waiting a few seconds, then rebooting show the problem ?
3. Does waiting (~15 seconds or so) after making a change to a note before logging out make a difference ?
4. Does the newline keep adding ? So, if you do this repeatedly, do you see lots of empty newlines ?

Early in -ng's development, it was necessary for a note to have one trailing newline. Don't remember the details, maybe it was a KMemo issue, long solved and the code to add that one (and only one) newline removed. But my memory is scratchy there. Maybe ...

ok, i've changed my previous comments, it should be better now.

Here are the result of the test :
1.1. closing and reopening the application do not trigger the problem,
1.2. yes logging/logout trigger the problem but only notes with a font size changed (ctrl+A then select small) are involved
2. yes, closing tomboy and doing a reboot trigger the problem
3. Nope this doesn't change anything
4. Yes, i have a new newline after each reboot

I understand this is a bit confusing. I'm confused myself.
I'll will setup a virtual machine to do extended test.

Yep, thats good. I did understand but given the wierdness, needed to be absolutely sure.

Here are the result of the test :

1.2. yes logging/logout trigger the problem but only notes with a police size changed (ctrl+A then select small) are involved

Maybe a translation error of some sort "a police size changed" - I don't understand. Might be important. Do you mean "select all" and the "select a small font" then shutdown ? If the note consists of normal font, the problem does not rear its ugly head ? Stranger and stranger ....

OK, I need to be really really clear here. You close tomboy-ng, wait, say 15 seconds and then reboot. And that then changes your notes ??? But if you just close tomboy-ng down, wait awhile, start it up again, no problem ? Thats crazy ! If tomboy-ng is not running (after being closed) then "something else" is altering your note files during either shutdown or startup ??

OK, here is a plan. Suppose I send you a patched binary that, when it starts up, it writes a log of the OS timestamp of each note. And, when its almost finished closing down, it does the same. That way we can see if "something else" really is fiddling with your notes between shutdown; reboot; startup. I don't believe is but given what you say above, well, I just don't know !

Would you be happy to send me that log ? It will show only file names, no content or title. If you have a lot of notes, will be biggish ...

I apologize. I live in France and i use tomboy-ng in French. I do translation as i can.
In French, in the context, "police" means "font" (i know it's a bit confusing with police with red and blue lights, but french is like this. Really funny when sentences are outside the right context)

I'll do more test to be sure. I need to setup a VM to do that. and i understand this is confusing.

I would like to suggest another way (simpler ?) :

1. i deactivate auto-launch
2. i close tomboy and look if the process is not there anymore ( ps -eaf | grep tomboy )
3. i do a ls -la in .local/share/tomboy-ng
4. i reboot
5. i do a ls -la in .local/share/tomboy-ng
6. i launch tomboy-ng

Is this ok for you ?

Now I feel OK with 335, I' like to chase this up. As you say, screen dumps demo-ed the problem in 335 but seemed to say that the files had not changed during a restart. But I notice that snapshot and backup directories have been updated. So tomboy-ng must have been still running, nothing else would change them IMHO.

Are you still seeing this issue with the new binary ? I cannot reproduce it I am afraid.

Ah, police and font same word in French ? That I did not know ! But I am Australian, and terribly ignorant of any language other than English. Sigh ....
