update programs that has an "auto update" feature

Some programs like pkgfile on Arch Linux, or mandb (preinstalled on most distros), ship with a service that automatically updates their entries daily.

Personally, I don’t really like having a service running in the background just for this. So I usually disable these services and add scripts to my topgrade config to refresh their databases along with everything else. Like this:

"ManDB" = "sudo -n mandb || sudo mandb"
"PKGFILE" = "sudo -n pkgfile --update || sudo pkgfile --update"

My goal is, what do you all think about having support for this type of tool, is it a good or bad idea? I like the idea, but I think most people don't really care about having a service running for this.

Yes, having these as opt-in steps is perfectly fine. Feel free to open (preferably two separate) issues for these!

What do you mean as an opt-in step, you mean like the git step, that needs to be enabled in the config file?

Yes, exactly. For example:

[mandb]
# Enable the mandb step. Mandb is updated in the background by a service on most systems by default.
# (default: false)
# enable = true

It might also be technically feasible to have Topgrade disable these services, but that's a discussion for another time.
