See RFC 115 and RFC 115 Write API: implementation tracking #14295. We want to make sure headless previews will work just fine with the new API, ideally as soon as it’s released in Wagtail 8.0.
As much as possible this should be done with little to no adjustments needed on existing projects, and support for both v2 and v3.
